    Alcohol

A month sounds soon to be drinking... I know in Tjuanna, my daughters doctor, told her to avoid excessive drinking and vomiting.

Your very welcome JCallie... I think I speak for everyone when I say we are all here to help... Even though my daughter had the surgery, and not I, I had many questions, concerns and fears... You know your schedule, your life, what will work best for you and your lifestyle. My daughter had her surgery Dec.31/12.... the reason being, it was just convenient... I work for the school division, and it was during the Christmas break, so I did not have to take time off work to be with her...convenience.... After we set the date, it was great for my daughter, she was looking forward to starting the new year. What a great way to start the New Year! So I don't really know if there's a good time, its whatever works best for you... Good luck, and we are all here for you, as we had others, here for us!!

Yes, depression... my daughter has that as well... She has her days... thats why I have to be careful what I say... I want to be supportive, not critical, but I know at times, to her, I sound critical. Which I dont mean to, I want to be helpful. You hit the nail on the head, when you said being active helps with depression.... My daughter as well, will also have to watch what she eats. She always says, she doesnt want to be super skinny, just be healthy.... I totally agree with her. She does look so awesome right now, even though she has about 30 more pounds to go... I'm sure you do as well!!! Nice chatting with you Bos...

She is doing well, but the weight loss has slowed right down... dont think she's lost this month, which is fine... My concern is, I think now, she's going to have to be more careful with the choices she makes. Up until now, she really hasn't had to. Having said that, she really doesnt seem to have the sweet tooth she once had... some of the things she loved, she doesnt anymore.... she eats small amounts often, and I find it seems like alot of carbs... Like I said its worked for her up until now... I do wish she could exercise a bit and be a bit more aware of what she's eating... I think its just because she's much younger then most who have the surgery... which was one of the reasons I was hesitant about allowing her to have the surgery, wondering if she was mature enough to "get it", that the surgery was just a tool, that she had to do the work... it still concerns me. Dont get me wrong, I'm very happy for her, but I worry she will gain it back, because she seems to eat what she pleases... and not gain, so far...

Yes Bos, they did what was called a Fluoroscopy, which I guess is like a barium test. Had to drink something and then they did an xray... Like I said, she didnt want to really go, felt fine, but it was I as her mother, felt if anything went wrong, I'd never forgive myself... So it put my mind at ease. They did also say its a good idea to come back in a year, at which time we feel we probably won't do, as long as shes feeling well.

Yes, Bos123 my daughter and I traveled back to TJ, July 1/13, her appt was July 2. She was not really having trouble with anything, it was more for peace of mind. I just felt I needed them to tell me everything was good, which they did... She has had alot of acidity since surgery, and needs a prescribed ant acid daily, which was prescribed by a doc here, who knew nothing of the surgery. TJ assured me what was prescribed was fine. The doc here and there, said she may need it the first year... Having said that, she also needs to be aware of what foods to stay away from. It was also my idea to go back, she really did not want to, but we made a bit of a holiday of it and stayed in San Diego a few days.

Hi JCallie01, my daughter, who was 18 at the time, had Gastric Plication Dec.31/12 , and to date, has lost 75 lbs. with about 30 to go, but the weight loss has really slowed down, as of now. Having said that, she herself, has never really tryed to 'diet', its mainly been portion control for her. I think if she now wants to lose the remainder of her weight, she is going to have to diet and exercise. We live in Canada, her surgery was done in Tjuanna Mexico, at the Obesity Control Center, by Dr.Ortiz. The surgery was not offered in Canada, also any weight loss surgery is WAY cheaper there. Our entire experience there, has been wonderful. No complaints. There were no therapist appts scheduled, I assumed due to the distance. Her Pre Op diet, which she started 2 weeks before surgery, consisted of protien shakes, Lean Cuisine dinners under 300 calories, sugar free popsicles, and juices I believe. She managed to lose 17lbs before surgery, it was tough for her though. Recovery went well, I'd say the first week was the toughest, but her biggest complain was how tired she was, I noticed it too. That lasted a month, but got better. She did have some pain, but mostly complained of acidity and gas. She still has trouble with acidity, and has a perscription for an ant acid which helps alot. Tums and so on wasnt enough for her. To sum things up, plication has been wonderful for her... There were no complications....We just came back from a check up, July 5/13, as we wanted to follow up and be sure, seeing we live so far away...she had little pain, but was uncomfortable, and had to learn portion control. She was terrified as well, and had many questions too. I think thats normal. I wish you luck, and hope this has been helpful!
  9. Thanks Bos, thats what we were thinking we should try as well.
  10. Hi everyone...my daughter had her plication surgery Dec.31/12...when she came home, she had antacid medication prescribed, for the first 2 months. She has finished that, but continues to suffer quite a bit from upset stomach and acid reflex. Does anyone have any suggestions as what to take, to help relieve this? So far she has taken Tums and Papaya Enzymes...some relief, but is frustrating to her. Open to any suggestions and your experience with this... Thanks

    New and Nervous. ..

Thank you TC....My daughter was 288 lbs. before surgery....She actually started about 1 month before surgery, because it was during the Christmas holidays, and she knew it would be hard... she had a protien shake in the morning, one at lunch, then a Lean Cuisine at supper, and sometimes a shake before bed.... By the time her surgery date arrived, she had lost 17 lbs. the 2 days of liquid diet, before the surgery, i what helped her reach her goal before surgery... it was hard for her, but she did it! The vision she had of herself, thin, helped her achieve the weight lost before surgery...Now, its easy for her, for the most....she does exercise as well, but not everyday yet. She is still able to "cheat" a little and still lose weight right now...However, I believe the closer she gets to her goal weight, the harder it will become, and her "cheats" will have to be minimal...right now, she can get away with it..Good luck to you again!

    New and Nervous. ..

Hi TC44055 My daughter(19) had plication surgery Dec.31/12 and is down a total of 52.6 lbs! She still has about another 50 to go, but is doing very well...I am soooo proud of her. We were both very nervous(I think I was worse!) right up to the moment she went in....she was uncomfortable for about a week. Her biggest complaint throughout the whole thing, was how extremely tired she was the first month....she would wake up and just want to sleep... she was frustrated the first while, cause she was hungry, but things didnt agree with her..I think she tryed to eat to much, and to heavy of foods the first while...now all is good. Follow the doctors orders, do not try to eat more, or do more then they advise. I do not know of any chat groups...Good luck!

    6 days post op

Once again, I did not have the surgery, but my daughter(18 at the time, 19 now) did.... it was difficult for her being so tired as well... at 18, you should be full of energy, right?!!! She felt drained... after a full night of sleep, she would wake up and feel like she wanted to go back to bed!

    6 days post op

I personally, did not have the surgery, but my daughter did (Dec.31/12) and I remember her saying she had cramps...I think it is most likely gas from the surgery...we were told to do lots of walking. She was probably most uncomfortable the first week home. It's important to follow the orders given by your doctor. She was on fluids probably 3 weeks, then moved to soups. I remember she wanted "real" food, and tryed puree chunky soup, around week 3, without my knowledge, and it was to much, to heavy...it made her very uncomfortable. Good luck to you...
  15. Can anyone tell me if they have ever experienced food tasting different, like badly after their surgery? My daughter, is 1 month post op surgery, and actually ate something, and said it was awful, that it tasted like vodka!!! Has anyone else experienced this after Plication surgery? Foods tasting badly? Also, what kind of foods have others eaten 4 weeks out? When are you able to start salads?

    Near death experience

Wow! That is a very scary story!! Glad you are here to tell us about it... Hope things are going well for you now!
  17. Absolutely!!! I agree! .... but I do feel bad for her, her bday is Jan 24th and she will be 19... She says "I can't even go out for supper on my Birthday"! Then says, but when I do, I'm having mashed potatoes with mushroom soup poured over them"! Haha ... Ya, I know she turned down going with friends already, but mostly because she is just tired... Last night she fell asleep at 8pm, and I woke at 4 in the morning, thinking this isn't right, this is so abnormal for her, and I worked myself into a panic and had to check on her, and woke her up!! Lol....Then she couldnt go back to sleep!! Geee, thanks mom! She will get through it though for sure.... Thanks for chatting with me, its very helpful, seeing you had your surgery so close to hers... everything is still fresh in your mind, and you are able to answer lots of my questions.
  18. Yes, you are a busy lady! Lol, I am sure your kids account for some of your "low energy" for sure!! I hope she has more energy soon...She is so tired of juice, broth, yogurt and protein shakes! Lol... She is on day 12, so soon!

    Sleeved on jan 8th

Congratulations! Best of luck with everything! my daughter had Gastric Plication Dec.31/12 and is down 13.5 pds since the surgery, 26.5 all together.
  20. Wow! So are you taking lots of vitamins? Someone told me she should take multi vitamins, B12, and Biotin... She was only taking 2 Enspira Multi vitamins...1 in the morning, and 1 at night....The tiredness concerns me, because she has applied for a job that consists of 12 hr. days, in about a month it starts, and I'm not sure she will be able handle it. There's a good chance she will get the job...
  21. How long before you noticed you had more energy? Was it gradual? My daughter is getting a bit frustrated with it. Says she wakes up, and shortly after wants to sleep again! She's 18 tho and just wants to be with her friends!
