Over a foot accumulation with 3 ft drifts on our road. They didn't clear our road until early this morning.

The good news is I just got called and my Surgery has been rescheduled to the 28th. Hopefully 2 days off my pre-op diet out of 21 won't have done too much damage.

The not knowing was driving me nuts so I just rescheduled for 3 weeks from now. My surgeon told me to go off the pre-op diet for a week so I made some less than steller food choices after that (opting for things I won't be able to have while on the recovery diet) but still managed to stay under my calorie goal at least. I live as close as any of the hotels the real issue is the poorly conceived snow clearance plan for our city.

I'm in Nebraska where the weather is nice except when it's terrible. 2 days ago it was in the 50s today it's single digits.

Nervous rant
So I just called to reschedule my surgery the newspaper just printed the snow removal plan and if I'm lucky they'll get to my house 12 hrs after my surgery time probably closer to 18. If I can't reschedule to sometime next week it will probably be months before I can carve another week out of schedule for recovery. I'm so angry I want to just throw things and start yelling. I need to center myself before I start taking it out on my coworkers.

Portion Size
My understanding is this. The band serves 2 purposes It creates a smaller passageway for the food we eat slowing the time it takes food to pass and it creates a pouch near our satiation receptors. Food can easily enter the pouch but leaves it slowly so we feel full sooner. The pouch is normally placed to provide 1 tablespoon of capacity but will naturally stretch to be approx. 1 cup and still be effective. The more and faster we eat the more the pouch stretches until eventually we expand the pouch to be as large as the whole stomach was originally. Our dietary guidelines may vary but they ultimately serve the same purpose teaching us to eat slower and use smaller portions so the pouch can tell us we're full before we over stretch it.

Nervous rant
The hospital is less than 2 miles away so I could walk it easily if it wasn't record cold temperatures and I wouldn't literally have to cross 2 cornfields. The fact the hospital is so close is what will be so frutstrating. SInce I live in a rural area even if there are only 6 inches we could have 3 ft high drifts let alone the 2 ft their currently predicting. Ironically these situations are why I want a jeep. My truck would probably make the trip but my wife is not as comfortable driving it and she's the one who will have to drive me home while the snow is theoretically still flying. My hope is that the temperature drops enough that the snow doesn't start to fall heavily until after I'm home.

Nervous rant
I am going nuts right now. I'm all ready for surgery on Thursday and now a snowpocalypse is looming for the 18 hrs before and after. After a winter with minimal snow apparently it's all gonna dump on my town just in time to interfere with getting to and from the hospital. I've already called to make sure it wouldn't cost extra to postpone but it will be a nightmare to carve alternate recovery time from my work schedule. I'm just filled with impotent rage right now it's as if the universe is saying "I don't care how ready you are I am still fully prepared to stop you from moving forward" I know it's silly and I need to just roll with whatever happens but I needed to vent.

Unsupportive Wife
My wife knows about my surgery but I can't say she's very supportive. Even now on the pre-diet she's obsessing about how I'm making her "feel like a pig" which is ridiculous I'm a diabetic whose been heavy literally since birth and she runs marathons and logs almost 100% above average for women her age on her Nike fuel band everyday. The two of us obviously have different metabolisms. It boils down to "I've decided this is something I have to do.". Hopefully your wife will eventually realize as scared as she may be this isn't about her.

my story
That means you started a the same weight as me and ave the same target weight as me which I assume means we're the same height (6ft). If you don't mind I'd really appreciate talking to you about things like your exercise level before and after the surgery as well as how much loose skin you're dealing with.

Sad :(
The only reason I didn't have to do the 6 month wait was apparently since I've seen my Dr a minimum of once very 3 months for the last 6 years and my weight was monitored the whole time for my diabetes and blood pressure.

Running after surgery
Actually my fear is that 6 weeks of just walking will set my meager running habit back. It took a year to build up the muscles to handlle the 6 minute bursts as it is. I'll do as instructed by my surgeon I was just wondering about other people's experiences.

Running after surgery
So I'm not a real runner by any means but I like to alternate running and walking in 6 minute intervals currently (so I can get 2 miles done in half an hour usually) How soon after surgery were people who do run able to resume it or start. My surgeon is saying 6 weeks but at the same time he seemed a bit surprised by the question so I assume I was the first patient to ask (or possibly just the first patient my size to ask).

Struggling
I totally understand that. My Surgeon has me drinking up to 2 protien drinks a day and then a normal dinner. I'm not hungry, I'm averaging 750 calories day, meeting my protien goals, and I'm losing weight but I keep thinking "am I doing this wrong?" I'm also thinking I've looked at too many different post op diets before my surgeon actually gave me mine. I keep telling my self "when you find a good mechanic you trust them to keep your car running once you've found a surgeon you trust you should trust them at least the same amount."

Struggling
I am amazed by how different our pre-op diets are. I've seen everything from strict liquid portioning to "my surgeon said not to worry about it". On one hand I'm glad to see we're all getting individualized care on the other hand it boggles the mind how different we all are.

Seriously Embarrassed !
I've broken so much furniture at friends homes I started buying chairs and such for me to sit on at their houses. When new friends first join our group sometimes they're perplexed why no matter where we meet there's a chair that is designated as "Fred's" chair even though no one else (including the host) has "assigned" seating.

5 days to go and feeling ready and worried
We have a local support group which meets monthly and I plan on going for at least a year after my surgery. It is an unfortunate coincidence that it happens to meet the same night of the week I usually meet with my natural support network of friends but I figure I can sacrifice 1 night a month of friend support for some more focused support. From what I understand they have a hard time keeping members especially if their successful which I think is unfortunate. I would hope successful lap banders would feel obligated to support others.

5 days to go and feeling ready and worried
Leslie80 I'm sorry to hear you're going through this by yourself. I'll admit I suspect the reason more people don't criticize my weight is predominantly fear that I would respond by hurting them. It really is unfair how differently men and women are treated when it comes to weight loss.

What did you tell you family/friends?
I've decided the only way I'm going to be successful in the long run is if people understand why I'm going to refuse certain foods and order small meals at restaurants. I'm afraid if I go into this with a mindset of being ashamed it won't be long before I'm succumbing to some kind of temptation and justifying it to myself with the excuse of "I don't want people to suspect." As of right now if someone asks specifically why I'm going to miss a week of work when I never miss work I will say I'm having surgery if they ask what for I'll tell them the truth I'm getting lap band to treat my diabetes and high blood pressure. I've always been a social eater and I'll admit I actually look forward to being able to respond when offered food "I can't have anymore, my stomach was altered and I'm full" All that being said it was a personal choice I'd encourage you to do whatever you're confident will help you on your journey.

5 days to go and feeling ready and worried
I've been overweight since preschool and grew up being easily described as "the big one" in almost any setting. After high school my body changed enough that I was more big than fat but after getting married I stopped almost all of the physical activities which had kept me more beefy than flabby. Now I'm older I've developed type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure and after losing as much weight as I could through better eating I'm still morbidly obese according to the BMI and even though my blood sugar is well managed my blood pressure keeps going up every year. On paper I guess I was a perfect candidate for lap band since it took less than a week for the insurance company to approve me after submitting reports from the Psychologist, Nutritionist, and my Internalist. My surgery is scheduled for Feb 21st and I'm currently on the slim fast diet for pre-op I'm losing about 2lbs a day on average drinking 1 shake and then having one balanced meal heavy on the Protein. When I tried drinking 2 shakes (the first 1 within 2 hrs of getting up) I was famished but if I wait to drink my shake until I'm actually hungry usually between noon and 2pm I feel full until dinner and then I'm fine for the rest of the night. I'm ready for this change but I'll admit I have some fear about how much of my identity is tied up in being "The Big Guy" and am terrified of the idea of becoming one of the cruel people who tormented me growing up. Right now I'm just feeling kind of isolated. I can't really talk about how I feel about the surgery with my wife or friends since they can't really relate. I know my friends will be supportive of my new eating habits and I can't tell you how much I look forward to being able to buy clothes in a store rather than having to order everything through the mail but I'm still working through my feelings about the changes I'm going through (and I suspect the dieting might be affecting my mood since I have been much more emotional this last week). Well that seems to be enough a rambling introduction.
