8 Day Post Op Follow-Up

I had a follow-up appointment after 8 days post-op. I selected my surgeon because he is supposed to be a leader in bariatric surgery in my area. I drove an hour for this particular surgeon and others do as well. Since my hospital stay, I feel that my surgeon has been dismissive evening when I was scared from the vomiting of blood. Well today, the staples were removed. My large incision bled and had to be packed. The nurse handed my mother a bunch of supplies and said we need to "pack it" everyday. What kind of policy is that?? I realize the dr. may do these procedures all the time but I don't get surgery often and find this scary.

Wow... I'm so sorry you are having to go through this. I had my surgery in MX and was very worried about having a distant surgeon. Mine has happily been very uneventful and my team has stayed in touch constantly even though it's in another country. I have seen many on here with staples for closing incisions. Mine were adhesive and healed super well.

Call your DR time and time again if needed..... don't take no for an answer. He has a reputation to worry about so- you take care of you- I know your scared... this isn't like having a pedicure. Dr's sometimes have a bit of a GOD complex... they have to be kept humble yet confident. I hope it's just nothing... but if not.... I wish you all the best from my heart.

I am sorry you have to endure this. Some wounds heal easier than others but thats small comfort when it's your body. A bigger question this doctor needs to answer to you is the why is the packing necessary? Is ithe wound not healing because of an infection, or excessive drainage, or low protein levels. Packing a wound is tricky business. It requires a health professional to show you how to do it, and then you doing a return demonstration to evaluate effective teaching. Hopefully he gave you a good rundown of signs and symptoms of infection. An open incision makes you a bit more vulnerable. The best thing you can do for yourself is to wash your hands often and try to get in your protein as it vital for wound healing. Take care of yourself and call that surgeon anytime you need t;, thats why you paid him the big bucks.
