I have read this site over and over and I read blogs about every aspect of this journey so you would think I know what to expect?? Today is my first days on liquids, ok I got this right? I have read about everyone and I know its gonna suck and think that I am so prepared. Being that I quit smoking cigarettes not the fake cigarettes my taste buds are on high alert I taste everything . Well I go to my shake today the one that meets the criteria and guess what I cant drink it!! I am 45 years old with a rock solid stomach and this freakin shake took an hour to go down it was just soooo bad. I am panicking it is now 7:30 and I am babysitting another at least trying and the same it just tastes so bad. So now I am supposed to eat 4 of these a day OMG how? Then I figuered I would take a break and move to chicken broth , well it smelled great when I tasted it more gag refluxes like before its low sodium and tastes like cardboard. Well needless to say I m not a chiuld as bad as this post may sound Im frustrated at myself and had to put salt into the saltless chicken broth. At least after the surgery I start with mushy puree foods something to look forward too. OK so today is day one and so far i have had 320 calories how am I supposed to do this . Im so disappointed in myself, and I just needed the 5 minutes to vent.

this is absolutely the hardest part right here. Can you try a different protein shake. I love the Premier chocolate protein drinks from Costco. Other ones I'm not to crazy about.........This will pass soon and you will be ok. :)

What are the shakes you are drinking. I buy the bariatric fusion. Mint chocolate chip and chocolate mousse are my faves. I hated the shakes at first. But I decided I was gonna do this right - and I needed to grow-up and be mature about it. Now i actually enjoy the shakes. And the pre-op liquid diet is the hardest part in my opinion. But it is a great way to prepare you mentally to saying goodbye to the food for awhile. I did liquids for 2 weeks post-op too. Way easier. After surgery you are never hungry.

Thanks Melissa, I am ok with not eating, but If I am allowed close to 800 calories I would like to take full advantage . Where did you purchase your shakes, online or at a local vitamin store? The only shake I found that came close was Bariatric support basic essentials. EEEWWWWW!

If you have a GNC nearby, they will usually mix up a sample of their various powders for you to try before you buy a big package - you might see about trying some out. Also, a lot of the ones you can buy online like Syntrax, Unjury and so on, you can purchase sample packs of the various flavors. While I like my current protein powder (Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Isolate) in a couple of the available flavors, I found that I really liked several of the Syntrax protein drinks - there are fruit-flavored ones and some that are more dessert-flavored. I also found that I liked the Unjury chicken broth flavored protein powder, though I think I'll just buy some unflavored powder to add to my own broths and soups for a bit more variety :)

I had 5 atkins advantage shakes a day. They were delicious. Can't tolerate them after surgery, but looked forward to them each day pre-op!

Become a mixologist.... I used unsweetened Koolaid, sugar free Torani syrup, cocoa, flavorings, sugar free jello powder, and instant coffee to make a lot of different flavors out of the vanilla or the chocolate. I cried the first day because I thought there was no way I was going to be able to do it. When I pulled out the sugar free jello and put it in there, it tasted like an orange dreamsicle and I loved it. You have to experiment with different flavors and you will find some fantastic ones. My surgeon would only let us use the bariatric advantage powder so I had to make do. Of course I can't even stand to smell one of those now though! LOL!

For 14 days after surgery I could take nothing in but water and not very much of it. Almost ended up back in the hospital and probably should have been but it was Christmas and I didn't want to go! It. Was. Aweful. It was also scary. I was SO weak. My dietician started working closely with me and got me through but it was a SLOW process. It initially took me 10 minutes to get one ounce of watered down apple juice in. I also could not tolerate protein shakes AT ALL. My tastes have changed as well and I am not a smoker so you must be going crazy! I cannot tolerate ANY protein shakes to this day and I am 5 months out. Hang in there!!!
