Not enough calories???

OK...so I don't think I'm getting enough calories?? I signed up on sparkpeople.com b/c I was curious to see. I entered everything I drank/ate today...and I think I was overly liberal with the portion sizes....but I'm only at 498 for the day. This is a problem, right?? I'm not sure how to get more in. I'm afraid that I'll get used to eating too much. Right now, I am having VERY small portions of mushies....and I"m not super hungry either. Any suggestions??

I'm definitely not an expert and you should always listen to your doctor. But,no, that doesn't seem like enough at all. I think 800-1000 calories is on the low side, but seems to work for some people. I seem to do well at 1500, so everyone is different. Good luck!

When were you banded? I had the very same situation when I was at about 4 weeks post op. I talked with the dietitian and she said that it's ok for a little while to have the calories that low AS LONG AS I WAS FEELING OK . . well I wasn't, I was tired and fatigued, so she had me add back in a protein shake once a day (along with my 3 meals / day) . . it helped. I've been feeling great and losing weight consistently. As I've progressed, I am eating more (up to a cup / meal) at my 3 meals / day, so some days don't need the shake, but most days still use it to keep my protein intake up and to keep up around 800 - 1000 calories. Hope this helps, but LoseIt is exactly right - what does your doctor's office say? Good luck!!

I was banded on the 10th, so just over 2 weeks post op. My Dr. wasn't there at the last appointment; there was a P.A. there instead. She said that I was doing well. I am just nervous about eating too much....I think I had read in the paperwork that it was about 1000 calories. Ack....I think I need to call them and just verify.

Follow your docs rules...1000-1200 was mine. You don't want to go into 'starvation mode' and that usually starts around 800 or less. You need protein and energy for your body. If you can't eat more, ask you Doc if you can do 6 small meals instead of 3. Best Wishes! -BG

Talk to the nutritionist. You are still on mushies so getting in enough calories may not be the focus where the protein is. When you get to solids I'm sure 500 is too low but again I'd check with the nutritionist. Don't you love that site for logging food???!!

Yes! I totally love it! I find it SO easy to log in my food and keep track of my water! I usually have such a hard time doing that....but it kind of makes it fun to see it on paper and all tallied up at the end of the day. I think it'll be easy to keep up with this one! :) A lot of the times on other sites I would get frustrated b/c I couldn't find the food that I was looking for......but this one seems to have a ton of different foods.

As far as the calorories...I looked on my paperwork and it didn't mention anything about calorie intake. It just said that I needed to hit 50 grams of protein per day, which I seem to be doing with ease.

Thanks for all of your suggestions! I LOVE this site! :)
