Help...newbie...liquid diet...pre-op...10-7-09

Hi All! I was so happy to find this forum...it is so informative! I was wondering if someone could answer a question for me...I am scheduled for the lapband on 10-7-09...I just started my liquid diet 2 days ago...I have a question about what are considered liquids...it seems silly...but all my dr. said was 1200 calories a day in liquids...I know I need 40gms of protein daily. I looked at the ppwk from my nutrition class for the post op liquid diet, not any info on the pre-op diet:confused:. It says jello, pudding, yogurt, strained cream soups, etc. Of course all fatfree, sugar free etc. I know I have to get in the protein shakes...but are this other things ok...for post op...Thanks so much in advance...I am confused!:bored:

It seems like surgeons differ in their protocols-- and myself, being a stickler for following the rules, I'd check with your doc's office. They should be ready, willing and able to answer your very good question.

The spirit of the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver while not running your body down. That is why Protein is key, calories are kept to around 1000 (for women), and fat/ carbs are discouraged.

That said : my doctor is Dr. Ren at NYU and I'm on a liquid diet (protein shakes of my choice) for 10 days pre-op as an fyi.

My surgery is 9/28/09 and I am finishing up day 5. It has been fine through today, but just this evening I started feeling really hungry... wah.

Just 5 more days until band day.

Hi Debbie,

I think every surgeon does it differently. Some people are allowed all kinds of liquids (as long as they are liquids) others have to follow strict guidelines. I would call the surgeon or the dietician to find out what you can have and what not, just to make sure that you follow YOUR surgeons directions correctly.

I had to do a 2 day pre-op clear liquid diet and I am currently doing a 2 week post-op full liquid diet. I am not allowed to have jello at all. But these are the guidelines MY surgeon gives ME and since every surgeon and every case is different I would really get in touch with your surgeon or his/her staff to clarify your questions.

Good luck on your journey!

Hi Debbie, and welcome to the board.

It surprises me that you didn't get a more detailed list of foods you can have for pre-op, but it looks like your post-op diet covers it pretty well. Rarely do two different doctors follow the same pre-op diet regimen, so you should check with your doctor's office for more info, but from what you've written I think you have a good handle on what your doctor wants you do. Be very careful to check for sugar free, low carb and low fat products during the pre-op stage which helps shrink the liver.
