two things: Milk diet and secrecy !!!

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I thought I would do a little thread as I am feeling positive after having a consultation with my dietician who has now advised me that I will be commencing a 'milk diet' to shrink my liver 1 week before banding (28th Feb is band date).

I can only have 4 pints of semi-skimmed milk per day and one oxo, one sugar-free jelly. I hope my willpower will hold out...

:)

Seondly, out of curiousity for anyone considering a band, or who has a band - were you secretive about having the op? I have only told 2 friends and close family about my banding.

How did you feel and did you tell anyone about your band?

For me, I don't want to shout about it - not because I am embarrased, but just because I don't want to tell everyone the ins and out of the procedure, what I can eat, how it works etc. Also, I don't want to be in a position where people are checking me out weekly/daily to see what I am eating and whether the weight is coming off......

If I do lose a noticeable amount of weight, I will just say I am eating less - which will be the truth!

So, did you keep your band a secret?

any replies are appreciated.

I'll be honest, I'm not keeping my band a secret simply because I'm proud. No one can say anything to me about making a positive change in my life. I totally understand your point though of not wanting to be watched with your eating and how fast your losing weight but everyone is different. You could be doing everything right and still not lose as fast as some else. And also those people who decide to judge you on how fast you're suppose to be losing..who made them doctors??? u know? thats just my two cents on this. Congrats to you though for getting the band and good luck with your pre-op diet. They have me on the low carb/fat high Protein diet for mine. Keep in touch!

I have only told a couple of close friends and some family. Too many people think this is the easy way out and it is not. It is still a lot of hard work. I am 2 months out and have lost 24 lbs. It is coming off slowly enough that I am not attracting attention. I will tell people later, i just don't want all the questions right now. This is hard for me and I need to worry about me for the first time in my life.

Hi, I havent told anyone apart from my boyfriend that I am considering getting a lapband, not even my parents. The main reason is that none of my friends or family have problems with their weight at all, and I know if i was to say anything they would just think, what are you spending all this money for, just stop eating so much!! (that has always been my parents view and I have always felt that they look down on me a bit because of my weight).

I'm considering telling my parents now because I have pretty much decided that I am going to get it fitted on the 18th April, and as much as im dreading telling them, I wouldnt like the thought of getting such a drastic operation without them knowing. Think im gona do it tonight, aaaah!!

I also think im going to do the milk diet, how did people find it??

I have told everyone about my band, there is no embaressment in taking control of your life and you should be commended for it :smile2:

I would rather people thought of me as someone who took action to change his life than someone who ate himelf to an early grave. heheheh Your real friends wont question your judgement or think worse of you. They will be supportive and wont ask awkward questions when you only eat small amounts. Lieing to people in my opinion just brings an extra dimension you can do without.

Hi

thanks for joining the thread.

Vicky - The milk diet for me was quite tough, but I didn't cheat at all. You will get through it and it is worth it in the end and I lost a fair bit during that first week - 9 pounds, which I was very pleased about.

The reason I have not told everyone about my band is due to my failings on previous diets. Some I have done quite well on before piling the weight back on and more.

I just didn't want to explain to everyone - especially work colleagues - for the fact that I would then be monitored and checked on for progress. Hopefully, when I lose a significant noticeable amount, I will tell them. I won't lie and say it was all down to sheer willpower. For me it is early days - just one month post-band and one fill, but when it is time, I will divulge all. Those are my reasons for being secretive, mostly down to past losses and gains.

Good luck to everyone.

Lisa

Hi Lisa, I to have just begun the milk diet, man its tough! I am on day two and already I'm starting to get a real aversion to the stuff. It doesn't help that my son and husband are eating normally around me. I am committed but I'm not so sure I can do another eight days without cheating? Did you by any chance have your surgery at Chichester?

Hi Tracey

Sorry for the late reply, our computer was being 'health checked' no internet - nightmare!!

You will be well into the milk diet by now. Yes, it is tough, but keep going as you will likely lose a nice amount and that will get your motivation going. It is one of the toughest things I have ever done. I didn't cheat at all, but did come close. There is not much you can do with just milk. I mostly had milky coffee which was bearable. You are right, watching people tuck into 'normal' food can be really hard. My son and hubbie were very good and tried not to make it obvious. I usually slunk away to the bedroom or watched tv - well away from the waft of 'real food'. Dribbling like Homer Simpson!

Luckily, I only had to do a week of milk; which was long enough. I know it varies from surgeon and Country as to what they like you to do. Sounds like you are doing more that than a week - :) keep going!

I had my surgery in Farnham - Mr Toh. It went very smoothly and I am nearly 2 stone down from my start date - which I count as the start of 'milk diet' start. 23rd Feb.

I have a fill next Saturday - my third and I feel I need some slight tweaking until I get to the 'sweet spot'. I am so glad I have done this, it is really worth it in the end.

Good luck with the milk and your surgery.

Lisa

Preop i did just 5 days Monday to saturday and then had op saturday.

They sent me shakes and Soups and a full dietry pack box for the week.

The shakes tasted like crap but the Soup after 2 days also we bad. Swapped to cupa Soups and made my own shakes, Ate 5 portions of fruit between meals so that i didnt cheat. Lost 1 stone in the week up to op.

Its all about shrinking your liver to make the op that bit easier and ready your body for the Fluid diet post op thats all. Dont worry about it. Your gonna feel 100% happy after the OP, its a life changing event tbh.

Ref who i told - i told all my family and friends and my work also. ALL!!! have been supportive including work who have sorted out a gym for me and support me daily. Once people know that you are making a change and the reaosn why they will support you no matter what.

Anyone that is negative towards you in this matter "you dont need to know them". Positive people enforce you in your ability to progress with your weight loss. I dont have anyone around me that is not anything but positive about the operation.

I have been a dieter for some 8-10 yrs - yoyo dieting loose 3 stone - put on 3.5 stone, loose 4stone - put on 4.5 stone. My family has issues with hearts etc so i don't want to be wasting any more time on yoyo dieting. Taking control of myself is the most satisfying thing i think i have ever done.

Having been at my highest weight i decided enough was enough. So tell who you like and then you will see who your real friends/family are.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
