Depression & Lapband

Recommended Posts

hi, i'm new to the site and i'm considering doing the surgery. i have chronic depression and have had it for half my life (so about 15-16) years. the depression has made it really difficult for me to stick to lifestyle changes i've made in the past, like going to the gym and eating healthy. when i'm in a downward spin, i tend to be an emotional eater and stuff my feelings. although my medication is working and i'm stable, i'm concerned how it will affect my post surgery behaviour.

i really would like to hear from folks who've had the surgery and how they've dealt with this concern.

thanks

I have been on laxapro for several years, both before and after the band. , and after thr first few fills, it will become hard to stuff your face. you will find another outlet more healthy

Babe,

Just be aware that the junk food that a lot of us crave will go right through the band no matter what your restriction unless of course you can't swallow your own spit which would be too tight! I had my band out last Friday because of eating around the band and also reflux problems. Certain antidepressants and anxiety meds can make losing weight difficult anyway so take all that into consideration when deciding on what WLS to have. Good luck Nancy.:)

Hi Babe,

I'm sure there are a lot of us out there with similar tales of depression and emotional eating. I've had chronic depression my entire teenage/adult life as well. I'm over a year out now and I can only say to you that the issues that were there before didn't magically disappear. They operate on your stomach, not your head. Continue on your medication and please make sure to get regular therapy before and after your surgery. If you are a binge eater, please seek help to address that before your surgery. You will still be able to defeat your band if you want to, and you may hurt yourself in the process. Slowly you will find other outlets to express your pain/frustration/sadness, etc... Hopefully they will be healthier ones. Please feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
