HELP - the golf ball syndrome!!

I've been so busy cleaning and doing laundry today, not to mention reading the forum off and on :frown: that I forgot to eat until about 30 minutes ago. So I chop up a quick salad and sit down to eat. Being in such a hurried state of mind, I completely forgot to take small bites and chew properly. The 3rd bite got stuck!! I never knew what people meant by the "golf ball syndrome" until now. It was the worse pain of my life! Thought I was having a heart attack. It seemed to even close off my air pipe. It went on for a good 3-4 minutes before I finally took a few sips of hot coffee. WOW...I have learned my lesson. Now I am scared that I've done some damage. Do I need to go on liquids for a few days? Help please!

Just getting stuck once shouldn't cause too much swelling. Try a yogurt later and see how that feels. Go slowly with your first bit of solid food. I don't think you need to resort to liquids.

good luck and good job on being too busy to eat (just like a naturally thin person)

I had my second fill 2 weeks ago and since then, I have gotten stuck a few times. It's a scary feeling! I have learned to slow down and chew better. Up until my second fill, I didn't have much restriction but now I do so I have to slow it down. I'm sure you didn't do any damage. Just slow down and chew better and you will be fine.

Yep what the others said, just chew (my doc said 15 chews per bite of food) and you will be fine.

My Doctor said to me, if you are in a rush dont eat, if you need to eat in a certain time frame, make sure people dont distract you so you can eat slowly, and if you dont have time to eat slowly, dont eat and wait until you can.

This is GREAT advice!

Rose, I don't think you've done any damage because it sounds like you stopped eating pretty quickly which is the right thing to do. Lettuce can be especially tricky, particularly iceburg! When choosing lettuce I usually go with darker, more tender varieties like red leaf or spring mix.

Unfortunately we have to all go thru what you did in order to learn our lessons. I'll never forget my first PB and it was a DOOZY!
