I turned 40 this year. In 1987 I had exploratory surgery due to a bad car accident. Twenty years later, my PCP tells me that the scar has herniated in three spots and they have to repair it. To make a long (and painful) story short, the mesh got infected and it had to be removed. I was left with an open wound and a wound vac due to the severity of the infection. The scar goes all the way to my stomach. That's a good 3-4 inches deep and begins at my navel and ends just below my rib cage. My question today is.....could this cause such a problem that I wouldn't even be considered for surgery? No, I can't talk to my 'Surgeon' about it, I haven't gotten that far yet. I had to clear it with my nephrologist first. I'm just hoping that there are other people out there that have had stomach surgeries that have prevailed.

I had gall bladder surgery done the old school way. I have a scar from between my breasts and it sort of crosses under my breasts and ends up in my side. It was not a problem for me.

As long as your previous issue is healed I'm not sure it would be an issue.

Is the wound still open? If it is the surgeon may have an issue with operating again on you.

I had major liver surgery 18 months before my lapband, and the a large incisional hernia repaired 6 months before my op. I have a huge scar and the surgeon had told me that if he was not able to put the lapband in laparascopically he wouldn't continue as I had also had a pulmonary embolism after the liver sugery (the hospital staff teased me that I didn't want to say goodbye to them so I kept getting complications!). The surgeon was able to put the lapband in though he mentioned that he first had to cut away a lot of adhesions from the previous surgeries.
