I have the biggest headache! What am I supposed to take? All I have in the closet is Advil migrane and Bayer and Ibuprophen.

tylenol- I use the meltaways and take at least two. I am too afraid to try to swallow a pill yet

Anything paracetamol. I'd reserve NSAID's for real inflammatory type pain (like a bad back) anyway, band or not. They're not great to be taking often.

I do occasionally suffer from bouts of sciatica and heel pain and my doc said once in a while ibuprofen is OK, just not on a regular basis.

What do people do who need them constantly?

Hi Guys, I regularly take Naprosyn for migraine. I have to take 3 when it starts and then 2 an hour later. I then can't take any more for 24hours. When this doesn't work I then have to take things like Nurofen tablets. The Nurse and Dr that did my banding both know this and they don't seem to have any problems with me taking these. I have never been told not to take any medications with the band. Hope every one is doing well.

I take liquid tylenol. It works really fast. The taste is starting to get old though.

If you have migraines I would seriously consider getting a prescription migraine med like imitrex or relpax. Most all migraine meds are small enough to take whole or cut in half. Most all prescription migraine meds do not fall into the NSAID family.

For OTC there is an excedrin that is aspirin free. Not the excedrin migraine though. The only difference between excedrin without aspirin and tylenol is added caffiene. I would also recommend using Head on (apply directly to the forehead, apply directly to the forehead:lol:). It helps me out.

I was not given any medical restrictions so I take regular excedrin for the headaches. In fact, had a serious fall less than a week ago and was given 750mg Ibuprofen to take daily. I have severe bruising on my thigh, still swollen, and pain, as the injury is on a muscle.

I think everyone should just do what your doc says. I think that the reason my doctor said not to take it was irritation and erosion concerns (everyday use, not occassional). I looked it up on the Lap Band site and it just says that it can cause stomach irritation.

Its not an issue for me because I am allergic anyways so I avoid them like the plaque!!

IMHO if your doc says its ok, then its ok. They know best!!

It does for me and a lot of my friends use it too. It's kinda like icy hot it makes your forehead cold and warm. I have tubes of it stashed everywhere. I get tons of headaches:sad_smile:

Eccedrine Tension Headache is 500MG Tylenol plus Caffiene. It works really well if you are trying to avoid NSAIDS.

I start with that for Migraines...then I progress to Fiorcet, which is tylenol, caffiene and a muscle relaxer. I'm also on Topamax to prevent migraines.

On top of THAT, I have back pain--my motivator for my lap band surgery. I take NSAIDS as needed under my general doctor's care and with my surgeon's OK pre-surgery I was on a prescription NSAID, but recently, I've just needed a Aleve or two.

Aleve is nasprosyn and my surgeon says it's the worst.....to never ever take it. The other NSAIDS are for "special" occasions only. My Dr would rather have me take a narcotic than NSAIDs.

Your doctor is an idiot. Well, not an idiot, but entirely too careful.

Naprosyn and ibuprofen are both NSAIDs. Both of them are just fine. If you have surgery, you might wait a week to two weeks. Technically, you don't have to. The reason why doctors are somewhat careful about prescribing NSAIDs is that they all have blood thinning properties. It is incredibly mild, though.

Acetominophin can take the liver whereas ibuprofen can take the kidney if they are overdosed, by the way.

WOW...I think saying he's an idiot is rather idiotic on your part. I'm an RN. I totally understand why. Has very little to do with thinning your blood and everything to do with the fact that NSAIDS cause damage to the stomach lining...known as ulcers. The faster they go through the less damage. Being stored in a pouch for awhile would be dangerious. But hey, go ahead, help yourself to all the NSAIDs you want. Just don't tell other people they can safely take them.

I should qualify the statement about narcotics....He means just once in awhile for severe pain. Not on a daily basis.

Nukechick, what is "the lapband site" you referred to in the above post? Does it list the medicines we can and cannot take?

Almost all the way down the page... My doc doesn't recommend NSAIDs, they can be used for short term usages, but not what to reach for every time you need some pain relief. Not a big deal with me because I'm allergic to NSAIDs.
