Got my surgery date!

Recommended Posts

So I finally got my surgery date after about 7 months of waiting. I am feeling so many mixed emotions but mainly excited and scared.

My surgery is on Valentine's Day or Feb 14th. I thought how symbolic because it's all about self love now in my life and treating myself to the life I deserve rather than put up with.

It's been such an emotional journey for me. I'm so ready now though. I just need to remember the good over the ugly parts.

I'm a little bit sad because I've only lost 26 lbs throughout this time but I worked really hard with psychologists and my psychiatrist to have a better relationship to food throughout all of these months. It was slow but my weight has been going down only for the first time in 2 years.

I'm on my preop diet now. It's really tough but I'm determined to do what I need to be surgery ready. I've been drinking so much Water having sugar free popsicles to curb my hunger pangs. It's almost messed up but I'm so excited to not have my appetite right after surgery for a little bit because it's quite a nuisance when you're eating 500 calories a day on a pre op stomach.

Anyway, thanks for everyone's advice over these months. Just wanted to share the update and express my feelings. If you're going through the same thing I'm always open to talk.

How exciting!!! It's finally here! I love your comment about "it's all about self-love", because you are so right! It took me a while to get there mentally.

Don't be too hard on yourself, because a loss of 26 lbs is fantastic! I lost 3 lbs during my waiting period. I did not have to do a full-blown pre-op diet. Just the week before my surgery, I had to cut out all carbonated and caffeinated drinks, sweets, etc. and amp up on complex carbs instead. I was told it helped with the nausea experienced from the surgery, and I can attest that it did! So I was happy about that.

Keep your eye on the big prize, and take it one day at a time. You have 11 days to go......it will be here before you know it.

I'm 2 weeks post-surgery and I've lost 22 lbs. I had the sleeve. I can tell you, I have very little appetite. I don't feel hungry at all. I have to remind myself to eat my 3 meals a day to make sure I meet my Protein requirements. It's crazy. The only thing I crave is COFFEE......isn't it crazy? It's not even food....it's a good robust coffee with the Funfetti-flavored creamer.....sigh....

Keep us updated! Good Luck! ♥

Thank you for your kind and encouraging words. I am also still learning that our journeys aren't linear and won't look the same. Congrats to you on getting through the surgery. Can't wait to be where you are haha

Ephemeral said everything I wanted to say!
It is very exciting to get your surgery date.

Yes!!!! Keep your eye on the main prize, a better life for yourself. I’m glad you are working through your relationship with food. Knowing how you got to where you are & knowing what NOT to do are very, very important!

Haha my surgeon literally said "you'll be my date!" Jokingly of course. I'm doing a lot better. I don't even need Tylenol anymore because the pain is very slight. I do have to take nausea meds. I'm mainly having issues with gas, Constipation which is making me queasy.

I also get dizzy really easily, especially when transitioning from sitting to standing.

But beyond all that liquids, popsicles, Jello, all going down fine. I think im getting moved onto pureed food on Tuesday so I'm looking forward to that. I really miss cooking and having food be a normal part of my routine. I don't even want junk or to overeat, just looking for some normalcy and I hate the taste of Protein Shakes.

How's your recovery going?

I stayed a second night in the hospital due to pain and lack of a dedicated caretaker at home. Since my dad is having health issues of his own, my mother was unable to travel to be with me so i felt better staying in hospital longer. Im single and live alone with pets, so dont have a human at home to help if i were to have an issue early on, but now im doing well enough i can get myself to the ER if necessary.
i am on pureed foods, and tolerating it ok so far. Only a couple episodes of vomiting which were definitely over eating related. Liquids and yogurt dont make me full so i just stop eating after a serving. But more “solid” foods do. Still learning to eat slow. Im used to eating on the go so taking a full 30 min to finish 2 oz is a real challenge. I dont feel any restriction, i seem to go from hungry (starving) to pain. Im thinking the pain is the new full feeling, which sucks. I used to enjoy eating but now not as much.
i miss food too. Hopefully we will both be able to incorporate more normalcy into our diets soon!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
