Esophageal dysmotility

Recommended Posts

I got sleeve Oct 15/20, and developed GERD almost immediately after. I have trouble swallowing things now too - my surgeon thinks its because of the GERD and acid and irritating my esophagus. At 1 month post-op, I had a barium swallow done, and the report indicated esophageal dysmotility and "tertiary contractions".

My surgeon is sending me for an esophageal motility test (esophageal manometry) next week. He wants to convert me to bypass at the 6 month mark because of this.

Thank you for the reply! I’m sorry to hear you’ve gone through that.
I had my sleeve 9 weeks ago and on recent barium swallow they’ve seen the esophageal dysmotility. I also had a hernia repair at the time of the sleeve. I’ve had the chest pain/ stuck feeling on eating and drinking most things. I talk to the surgeon this afternoon so wondering what he’ll say 🙈

Yup sounds exactly like me too! I also had a hiatal hernia discovered during surgery and then repaired.

Barium swallow isn’t diagnostic for dysmotility - ask if he’ll send you for an esophageal manometry test.

Have you also been having GERD/acid reflux/food regurgitation?

I also struggle with things feeling stuck. I have been not able to drink much Water so I have fainted several times in my 4 months since surgery :(

good luck with your appointment - let me know how it goes for you !

Oh ok Thanku for the info! I haven’t had any GERD or reflux amazingly and I have the feeling like I’d like to regurge but I haven’t. Mainly the chest pain and stuck feeling and a quite bit of gurgling noises with eating and drinking for a good hour and a half after meals. I’ve been forcing myself to eat and drink but it has been unpleasant :(
Sorry to hear you’ve been so unwell! I hope things get better soon for you!

He wants to monitor it for six months in the hope that perhaps the symptoms will improve some and then if not we will do an endoscopy and he will try a balloon dilatation and he said if that all doesn’t work bypass is the only sure fix. He said to take an hour for meals and go really slow. I’m really not keen on having to go to bypass so we shall see hey. Thanks so much for asking!

Exact same case as me. Monitor until 6 months, but only real solution is convert to bypass. An hour for meals sounds INSANE, doesn't it? I hope your dysmotility can go away on it's own.

Yes sure does!
Bit of a long story but the reason I’m not keen for bypass is I’m wanting to do one last round of IVF and I will have a limited window for that. I’ll just see how we go I guess. Thank you! I hope things work for you too :)

GIRL - I'm in the same boat!!! I am almost 32, and never pregnant. I want to get pregnant as soon as possible, but if I have the RNY then our fertility doc still wants to wait 18mo after surgery. SO frustrating.

Argh yes it sure is! I hope it hurries for you!!
I’m 40 this year and hubby and I have been trying for almost 19 years. We have a couple of frozen embryos left so were hoping to go and use them when I’m able to. such a balancing act isn’t it!

Hi. I just wanted to check in with you guys and see how you were doing with your motility issues. Did you end up having surgery for it?

I had a Sleeve Gastrectomy in 2017, I am now on my third revision operation and have been suffering over the last 2 years with horrendous GORD.
is anyone on here from Scotland and had surgery with Prof Bruce and experienced any issues with this surgery at all. Looking like I will need further revision and now full Gastric Bypass, it’s not looking good 🥲

just wondered if anyone on here from Aberdeen, Scotland with similar situation

Hi there! I’m almost 8 months PO and am still being monitored. It has gotten a little better but not completely. I am learning to deal with it though I think 🙈

I am glad that it seems like it is getting better. I did find a paper talking about this kind of thing happening after bariatric surgery, so apparently you are NOT alone : https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32558689/

It actually seems like a fairly common problem, which I wish I had realized before I ever had surgery.

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
