Sleeve to Bypass

Sleeved February 4, 2017

Bypass January 24, 2019

I had the revision due to acid reflux. I have a lot of discomfort in my upper back/shoulder area that I didn’t have after the sleeve. Yesterday I also had extreme Constipation and think I may have pushed to hard (sorry TMI but I can’t find help online). Anyhow. I don’t have continual pain in my abdomen, just when I move and no leakage. It’s more the back pain/discomfort that is concerning me. Thinking about it it goes from mid back up to shoulders. I can only sleep lying on my back as I’m scared to lie on my side and end up getting up every 2 hours due to my back.

So I guess my questions are:

  1. is this discomfort/pain normal?
  2. When should I be concerned? No vomiting, fast heart rate, nausea...

I'm pretty sure the gas has passed now. Sorry this is all over the place. I hope this makes sense. It’s 136 am 😂

I had pain in the same area after my bypass surgery. I knew it was from the surgery because I had the same pain when I had my appendix out. I laid on my back for almost 2 weeks to sleep and it finally went away.

The shoulder pain is from the gas that was used to blow up your abdomen during the surgery. Some surgeons are better at getting the gas out then others.

My pain lasted for 3 weeks! It was horrible. I used heat & a tens unit. The pain meds didn’t really help.

I also had a lot of pain in that area and thought surely, if it were gas, it should have been gone by then.

Thank you so much for your replies. Eases my anxiety. This morning it seems to be more in the shoulders. Stupid air! Worst part of the surgery.

Agreed, this is the worst part of the surgery! I had so much pain after surgery that they hooked me up to a EKG machine to monitor my heart, but in the end they said it was trapped gas from the surgery. It took about 14 days to finally let loose and feel no pain between my shoulder blades. I wish you luck and know that it will pass and relief is only a matter of time.

Hello,

Sorry you are having the pain...I didn't have much of that at all w/ sleeve or bypass revision surgery, but I did with my open abdominal hernia surgery. Brutal, unrelenting pain in the area you described it... back/shoulder pain....ugh..... That is gas pain, as people have already told you. People say walking helps, please try that, it may help you...it didn't help me. My pain lasted for almost 3 weeks, never thought it would go away, but it finally did. You are only a few days out, yours may not last long....but seriously, walk as much as you can, it's worth a shot to try and push the gas out.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
