You probably won't be allowed (or at least it won't be on your plan) to be drinking apple juice either pre or post sugery (or any other sugared beverage for that matter).

Generally Clear Liquids are going to be broth, sugar free drinks (poweraide zero, Water, crystal light, etc), plus supplemental Protein Shakes. The name of the game post op is going to be getting as many calories you can from Protein and longer term getting as few calories as you can from liquids.

All that said some surgeons have different rules and recommendations, so take what anybody here says with a grain of salt.

how is a Protein Shake clear liquid? I am planning for post-op. I am a medicare patient. There is no pre authorization required.

It's not a clear liquid per se, but it is usually what you will be eating in the first phase of your post-op diet (and probably in your puree and soft food stages as well). You should reach out to your surgeon or nutritionist for details on what they expect you to be eating/drinking in both the pre-op phase as well as post-op.

Nothing that's I've mentioned really should reflect on the source of your coverage.

I tried to buy ahead and ended up wasting money, because after the surgery things I liked pre surgery (sugar free popsicles, sugar free PowerAde) I hated. Now my taste has returned to normal and I can tolerate. My advice is to buy small amounts of a variety of things and hope that a few work out for you.

Good luck- the first week post op is not fun (but not horrible) but it gets much better!

I am planning ahead for my May 9, 2018 gastric sleeve surgery. I have bought 10 packets of Jello and 3 gallons of apple juice. Anyone else preparing ahead?

100% juice was on my clear liquid approved diet. This is very early on when I could only have 2-3oz per hour. However, I was only on this during my hospital stay. I transitioned to full liquids after that. I'd say that after you can progress to Protein Shakes, skim milk, ect. you should stay away from sugary drinks. If you need to add juice to your Water for taste, that is always an option. However, make sure you are drinking 100% juice, no additives or sugar.

I found I bought way to much and prepared too much. I think it helped me mentally get through the waiting game of surgery. However, I wish I wouldn't have bought so much. There is a lot I'll never touch again.

Make sure you get something with Protein. I’d supplement your Jell-O with unflavored Protein Powder. I’d do the same with your apple juice. You’ll have to Water it down, as it is high is in carbs. Most fruit juices are. You should consult with a nutritionist. I have mine on speed dial, and ask her if it’s ok to have when I need a substitute. I’m on day 5 of my preop, surgery date 4/14.

My nutritionist said post surgery 100% juice watered down 10 to 1(water being 10) was ok during the clear liquids stage, but YUCK. I'd stick with sugar free flavored drinks and if you can tolerate them Protein Water.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
