I’m looking to reach out to anyone that started this process with a BMI under 40. I have a couple maybe three comorbility factors. The reality is I feel horrible and I have struggled with my weight for many years. I hit a plateau and never budge. My doctor referred me but my BMI is 37-38. What should I expect?

Hi I was referred by my doctor and my BMI is 36 & I only have one comorbidity. I have been approved for surgery & have a surgery date of April 9th. My doctor has even required me to lose 10% which will drop my BMI to around 34 & will still go through with surgery. Depending on your insurance to get approved for surgery your BMI should be 40 & over. If you have a lower BMI some insurance require one or more comorbidity.

I don't have a lot of info to give you, as I have just started the process. but I am in your same spot- I have a BMI of 38, and I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and a thyroid disorder. over the last 2 years I've seen quite a few relatives, friends and coworkers undergo bariatric surgery. I finally hit my bottom and my general practitioner doc reluctantly sent in a referral for a bariatric consult. I had that Tuesday, and found out I qualify. I have just started my 6 mos. diet tracking for insurance, so if all goes well I would be having a sleeve done in late summer-early fall.

I put off making the appt. for a long time, because it was my "last resort", and I was afraid they would say no and I would just be gutted. i'm so thankful that didn't happen, and everyone in the office was very supportive. of course, they're getting paid by me too, lol. :)

have you had a consult yet? or are you just thinking about it?

My doctor just referred me last week. She was not hesitant at all but she’s not sure they will accept me. My orientation is 2/6. I eat okay, some weeks are better than others, no diabetes (although I’m close) and no heart disease or high cholesterol. When I eat good I’m really healthy, I fall off when I’m busy, but I can’t lose weight, or I get injured a lot. I have trouble breathing sometimes and a few years ago I had mild sleep apnea (I think I still have it but I haven’t been back to have it checked) and very heavy periods that completely wipe my energy out - I’m on medication for that. Anyway I’m tried of losing weight only to plateau at 20-25 lbs and never moving the scale, overall my numbers are slowing getting worse

Which surgery did you select, how much weight do they predict you will lose. How are you going about deciding who to tell in your life?

Im choosing to go with the sleeve since I dont have to lose to much. My surgeon has required me to lose 18 pounds before surgery which will lower my BMI to 34 before surgery. He said I should be within my weight range for my height after surgery which is 100-105. I’ve been really trying to keep this a secret. The only people that know is my parents, my bestfriend & one cousin. They all have been supportive.

It really depends on your insurance. I started with a bmi of 39 in July, currently I'm at 37 and have 2 comorbidities. My surgery is scheduled for Tuesday. I was told that my insurance won't cover it if I went under 35.

Figuring all those details was much easier talking to the doctor' office. They knew my insurance requirements and specifics without even looking them up! I did start online, to find an approved provider, went to his seminar, and went from there.

If you are cash.... well, that's another story!

i'm doing a sleeve. doctor said I do not have to lose any weight, but if I want to, I should stay above a 35 BMI to ensure insurance coverage. he said that since I have a "lower" BMI, I could expect to lose all my excess weight, but that varies from person to person and by how closely they follow the program.

besides my husband and 2 kids, only 2 other people know at this point. 1 is an aunt to already had the surgery too, and the other is a coworker who had it done.

I have a BMI of 38 and have to lose 12 pounds per my surgeons requirements, which will put me at a BMI of 36. I am 5’6, 37 and 234 pounds. I am super healthy except for horrible osteoarthritis. I have already had a total knee replacement in my left knee, so they are recommending WLS to help with that. We won’t know for sure if insurance will accept that as my only comorbidity, so time will tell. My goal weight is 150-160, even though I know I could stand to lose a bit more than that. I want to keep a bit of my curve, lol. [emoji3][emoji3]

I was a 38 BMI, 242lbs, 5’4 and I was approved due to comorbitities. My doctor recommended only losing 5lbs to assure insurance coverage. I was approved. I however had HBP, high cholesterol? Diabetes, thyroid, and degenerative disc disease(3 back surgeries), osteoarthritis. I would ask your dr if losing that much would disqualify you being you only have a few comorbidities.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
