PCOS with the Sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

So I'm curious if anyone out there has PCOS and how well the sleeve helped with weight loss? I was diagnosed at 20. I'm 34 now and my husband and I have been trying for 2 years to get pregnant with no success. I know losing weight will help alleviate some PCOS symptoms....but it has been so hard to lose weight with PCOS. I had the LAP-Band in 2011 and was a huge failure with it. I lost roughly 35 pounds after the first year, but it all came back and then some. After having some complications with it I'm having the Band removed in Feb. and hopefully sleeved 3-4 months after that. I just would like to hear from anyone with PCOS and has been sleeved....how have you done with it. Even if I can never have children...I still just need to lose weight and keep it off to be a healthier me.

I have PCOS. I was sleeved 10/17/17. Most of my symptoms have gone away. I am actually in dormant stage right now. All of hormones and etc are in check and good.
I must say, losing weight may help you conceive easier. But also it may not. I was 160 - 180 for 2 or 3 years, and I as never able to conceive. I did lose 90 lbs in my own, before being sleeved. I wanted to prove to myself And everyone else, including my doctors that I could do it! My problem is that I cant keep it off.
Sorry back to PCOS!! I knew when I was young that I most likely would not be able to have children. I never did invetro or anything like that. I figured if God wanted me to have children, he would make it happen.
Please remember everyones body is different. I do take 400 mg of Welbutrin a day. Your body make up and any medication you are on, may benefit or inhibit your weight loss. I also had my thyroid removed in Nov 2016. I would speak to my doctor in that instance. Good luck! Hope the weight loss helps out greatly! It has for me, and I am very thankful to have it all be at normal levels for once!

Yeah I know that my odds of having children are low, but if I can help those odds I would like to. I just need to lose weight and keep it off which has always been difficult for me to do. I was slow to lose weight Andy quick to put it back on. Thank you for your reply. I really appreciate it.

Ok, I do have PCOS... HOWEVER, I have been pregnant 3 times.....2 before surgery, one after lapband, and I got sleeved in March 2017.....thats my "disclosure" statement. I had 12 years between my last 2 pregnancies so, it may have been PCOS, but I don't know. Now, what I want to let you know is that my symptoms since my sleeve in March 2017 have dropped dramatically. My hair....face, body, yuck etc. and acne have radically decreased. My periods are monthly now......Yay...... ......and I have dropped 70lbs so far. I definitely feel like my surgery has had a dramatic impact on my PCOS. My last Dr visit, my blood pressure was 100 over 60.....I usually run kind of low, but have noticed a drop since the surgery. I know my weight loss has been a factor. I hope in some way this may help you out!

Thank you so much! That's encouraging! Congrats on all of your weight loss success! I hope that I have a similar experience! I'd love to the facial hair to go away as well as have a regular cycle!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
