Help with acid reflux

I am 8 weeks post op VSG and hiatal hernia repair. Approximately three weeks ago the acid reflux started. I am miserable. I am on 40 mg of Prilosec. I take it in the morning and by mid afternoon the churning in my throat starts. This does not happen everyday but almost. I am eating the same foods so that is not an issue. I plan to call my surgeon. I did not have acid reflux before my surgery. Any suggestions?

Hi Pennydog,

I had the same problem. After researching I learned that my stomach needed the acid to break down the protein I was eating. The Prilosec was trying to keep it at bay while my body was trying to produce more and more - what it needed to process the food. Within 48 hours of quitting Prilosec I never had the problem again. Also, don't eat anything for 2+ hours before going to bed. Put some bricks under the feet of the head of your bed if needed to keep your body in a slightly graded position. All of these will help, but my #1 suggestion is to quit the Prilosec now. You are far enough into your healing that it is no longer needed. It will only exacerbate the problem.

Best,
