Pre-Op drinks

Recommended Posts

So I started my pre-op liquids today. Please tell me what I can drink besides broth and jell-o? The broth I had today literally made me sick to my stomach and the jell-o was good but don't know how to survive in jell-o alone for 10 days. I need advice...

I'm in the pre-op stage, too, and I have two Protein Shakes a day, plus coffee (which I know I have to give up), herbal tea, and lots and lots of Water, usually with a little Crystal Light in it. Also sugar-free popsicles. My plan also calls for a lean dinner, thank goodness, but if yours doesn't, you can definitely expand your choices somewhat. I'd be surprised if Protein shakes weren't part of your plan, and they do help keep you going, though they're a bit too sweet for my taste.

My pre op diet consisted of 3 serves of Optifast a day either in shake, bar or Soup form. I was also told to make sure I get 1 teaspoon of oil per day to avoid gallbladder issues. I was then also given a list of approved vegetables which included, broccoli, celery, onions, tomatoes, carrots, asparagus, mushrooms, capsicum, cauliflower, lettuce, cabbage and brussel sprouts. (a few other things that I can't remember off hand). I used to stirfy them up using my teaspoon of oil. Or make a salad. I only had to do the totally liquid for the day before and of course after the surgery.

The purpose of this was to reduce the size of my liver and to make it softer so it could be easily moved out of the way during surgery.

As others have said in this thread, please go check with your nutritionist or surgeon to make sure you aren't missing out on key things because you still need nutrition and broths won't be enough.

Have you tried the Protein hot chocolate they sell online? Or maybe the fruit flavored Protein Drinks (they look like crystal light but with protein)? Of course, this would be bought online, so I'm not sure you'd have time to get them before your surgery.

Is there another broth you could try? You might be able to buy chicken noodle Soup and just strain out the solid pieces.

I’ve been drinking low sodium V8 when I get tired of the sweet drinks. I drink flavored waters, light Powerade, diluted juice, and SO MUCH WATER! My surgery is on the 28th. It’s hard during the holidays, but at least I can start my year off right! Good luck!

I saw that at the grocery store, but didn’t get it. I got some low sodium chicken broth, and some high Protein legume and veggie broth. The legume and veggie broth was GROSS! The V8 has saved me. I can warm it up and pretend it’s soup! Merry Christmas.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
