Post-op insomnia?!

Recommended Posts

Hi,

So I'm a week post-op now. I'm still sore on my left side because the big incision hurts like hell. But I'm fine, I felt better after day 5, post op.

I basically slept all day post-op days 1-3. Slept like a cat post-op Davy's 4 & 5, meaning I slept light & woke up from any noise. Day 6 & today, I can not sleep!! Last night I went to bed after 1AM, woke up at 3:30 AM to pee, & woke up & stayed awake at 6:30AM. So, that's 4 hours of sleep total. I thought I'd be tired tonight so I did not take a nap today. Right now it's 1:30AM & I've been up since 6:30AM with only four hours of sleep!!

I'm still on pain medication & it used to put me to sleep. It doesn't do it anymore. I'm wide awake. I also walked for 45 minutes outside to try to get my body fatigued. It didn't work.

Has anyone else had post-op insomnia? Is this normal? Why? Because this wasn't one of the side affects I've heard about. I mostly read people have no energy for weeks after surgery.

My sleep cycle was all jacked up for the first week once I was back at home. I had a prolonged stay at the hospital due to some complications so the continual wake-up calls every 2-3 hours for 6 days wrecked me. For the first few days at home I would wake up at 2 a.m. and then just be up from then on.

I didn't do anything special to get back on track. Just took my body some time to get back to normal, but it did after a few days. It can be frustrating but it'll get better!

Surgery disrupted my sleep cycle till I returned back to work. I slept only when I felt like it. I was afraid pain killers would mess up my sleep pattern so I took them sparingly..

Oh my yes! I was close to mental breakdown! Couldn't figure out why I couldn't sleep my second week. Slept a total of four hours in 5 days!

I finally went to the hospital, the gave me ativan which did nothing and went to my family doctor and got some sleeping pills. After using them for three days I was able to reset my sleep pattern.

Thanks for all your input. My nurse said it's normal. She doesn't want me to take sleeping pills because it's too risky to over dose. I can't wait to get back to normal soon.

You could maybe see if you can take melatonin Vitamins. I do that when I can't sleep, lately my mania (I have bipolar) has been so out of whack and I haven't been able to sleep but the melatonin helps. I'm not sure if you can take it so soon after surgery though! It's worth an ask though!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
