Pre-surgery Cough

Recommended Posts

So I'm scheduled for surgery this coming Tuesday, Valentine's Day - eeeek! and I have managed to come down with a cough. Not a cold but a crazy cough. No cold symptoms although I do feel slightly fatigued. No fever. No runny nose. No congestion. But a wicked cough that kicks in every couple of hours and is absolutely show-stopping. I'm worried that I might need to reschedule. My doctor says to let him know how I feel over the weekend and that rescheduling is no problem but I'm just so anxious to get this done and I've been waiting patiently for what feels like forever but I'm sure it's a terrible idea to undergo a major surgery with a compromised immune system. Thoughts? Advice? All appreciated. Thanks!

I had pharyngitis the Friday before surgery (the next Wednesday) and was put on a Z pack. The day before surgery i went to the office to see my doctor and he said to mention it to the pre op nurse and see about talking to the anesthesiologist before surgery and let him make the call. The anesthesiologist checked me out and gave me a breathing treatment to open up the airways prior to the surgery. I would suggest talking to yours prior to as well. Best of luck.

I wonder if this a symptom of silent GERD. I have no heartburn but a chronic cough.

Sometimes our bodies are telling us to step away. Don't ignore it. I agree that you should not go under a major surgery not feeling 100%

You can always reschedule. You have one life.

If the cough doesn't resolve before that, postpone the surgery. You don't want a "show stopping" cough when your abdominal walls are sore from the surgery.

Of course, when in doubt, get checked out! If this cough is unlike any you have had before, it must be something new.

I also have a cough. I have had it for years and do believe it is related to gerd. I have such horrendous coughing episodes. I can cough for months and then go 3, 4 months without coughing, then it comes back. I've been on so many meds and nothing really helps long term. This is a concern for me as I approach surgery. The first question to ask the surgeon. Im hoping surgery will elimanate the cough.

@carlychloe2 Please know that GERD can be worsened long term due to the sleeve. It's one of the most common side effects of the sleeve.

I never had acid reflux before the sleeve and now cough quite a bit.

All the best

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
