Is this the right decision?

Recommended Posts

My surgery is Feb 13. Im starting to have doubts like should i try another diet and be more dedicated to excercising before this. Do i want to give up so many foods for the rest of my life. I'm starting to get discouraged. Is there any words of wisdom out there?

Your chances of keeping weight you lose off on your own are somewhere between 2-4%. Surgery improves those odds by a lot. It's not a guarantee and still requires a lot of effort on your part, but you'll have a decent chance which you won't have otherwise.

The biggest part of success in this journey is changing your relationship with food. If your biggest concern is having to "give up so many foods for the rest of [your] life," then you should think about the hold food has over you before you make any final decisions.

I lost 99 pounds during my six month insurance-required pre-op diet program. But even with that kind of success, I knew that I needed this sleeve as a tool to help me lose the other half of the excess weight and then to maintain. Losing weight is easy, but, unfortunately, gaining it back is easier.

I'll never regret having the surgery. I'd urge you to follow through with the surgery IF you are willing to put in the work, and to change your relationship with food.

Good luck!

Only you can decide if this right for you. For myself, and this is a common refrain I've read on this board, is that my only regret is not doing it sooner.

I felt exactly the same way you did before surgery, I was worried I'd miss my favorite foods, I did all my "food funerals", saying goodbye to all the stuff I loved - again, I have ZERO regrets.

A few things. First, one thing I read was that many people post surgery have like a psychological change in their attitude toward food. It's not just a physical inability to eat more than your sleeve will hold. It's a reduction or elimination in craving the unhealthy stuff you used to eat. I didn't believe it, but it happened to me.

I used to love Love LOVE pizza. Easily my favorite food. I'd eat it a few times a week, and if I had it for lunch and my wife wanted it for dinner we'd eat it for dinner. During my two-week liquid diet pre surgery, I really missed it. Post surgery, it's like a switch has been flipped inside me. I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to eat pizza any more. Zero. When I think about it, I remember how much I enjoyed it. If I see a nice slice, I think "that looks yummy". But I don't want it anymore. I've even made frozen pizzas for my kids and when the leave some slices over, in the old days I would have gobbled them up, now I just put them in the fridge. There is no desire to have it.

And the same goes for all the other garbage I used to enjoy. I don't crave fast food, junk food, Snacks, etc.

I'm looking up recipes all the time and trying out new things. I just bought an Instant Pot and over the past two nights I made really good country style ribs with some barbecue sauce (zero carbs except the sauce and high protein), and tonight I had Honey Teriyaki chicken which was phenomenal. A few months ago I would just run out to the pizza place or burger king or wherever, or microwave some frozen crap. Now I don't even want that stuff.

I wish you luck in whatever you choose to do.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
