Not sure but I think the rule is that they don't have to have the details but you would need a note from doctor regarding required time off. Most short term disability requires you also to take like a week of sick leave first and depending on your job most people don't take more than a couple weeks. My doctor wouldn't sign off on more than two weeks unless I had complications

You have the right to take FMLA, and they can't fire you. Not sure if your in an "AT WILL" state or not. Look and see what rules and requirements is in your state. Most states, you have to have been on that job for at least a year. The catch also is, they only have to guarantee you "A JOB," not necessarily the job that you had. Well Goodluck with that.
