Is there anyone here who has had sleeve surgery who regrets it? If so, why?

"@@Crochet Queen" Your type of surgery is "new" and not yet covered by insurance, correct? If you were to do this again - would you have gone with the traditional sleeve?

I would never go down that avenue. Yes, I think that they should stop the program and spend all their time healing us until we are well. I think that we should be their priority but the NHS doesn't work that way.

I am really suffering. And they don't seem to know what to do now.

I would like to be referred to a gastroenterologist asap but it seems I just have to go through the system.

In America, legal action would get you what you want. Don't know about NHS in England. I tend to expect the worse from the government...

Now that I have Clostridium Difficile, and may have infected my family, I am re thinking my stance regarding legal action. If this drags on for months or if I wind up with even more serious problems such as bowel surgery, I may have no choice but to look into this.

Omg I had c diff for 3 weeks. Finally tested negative today!!

Had c-diff also. Caused by the numerous antibiotics to treat the sepsis. If this was my biggest problem I would have been thrilled!!

Oh no! Me also. Or I picked it up in hospital. In week two of 1200 mg a day of metronidazole. Still having symptoms, so much cramping and pain.

How long did it take to clear yours?

There are many posts about regrets. Use your search facilities to read them. You can read my details in my posts.

However, this is your personal journey. You organised this surgery for a reason. Only you can know why.

And deep down in your heart, you already know why you are "freaking out". Talk to your surgical team NOW to ask questions.

Don't make drastic, life changing decisions based on information on an internet forum.

If you really are unsure about surgery, any surgery, postpone until you are sure.

This is one surgery that you cannot reverse. It is definitely not an easy option. That being said, most people have it done, recover and are satisfied.

I am one of the small but significant people that made the wrong choice. I had post op complications, some that are permanent.

I contracted C Diff which I am still battling. I have permanent (dermatologist confirmed) hairloss that is obvious and embarrassing. I have a massive amount of loose skin that I can't have removed due to the C Diff and other issues. I recently was diagnosed with anaemia and Vitamin D deficiencies. I am back in the hospital next week for an endoscopy to investigate a suspected ulcer.

I am not one of those who just came out of surgery, healed and eat relatively normally. I often have to go back to Clear liquids. I am seven months post op now and my calorie level has dropped again to under 500 a day.

Such low calorie intake means that my weight loss has finally stopped as my body thinks that I am starving. So don't think low calorie always means rapid weight loss.

I am having to see multiple consultants for multiple problems.

I am currently attempting to treat the hair loss by using minoxidil, had punch scalp biopsies to diagnose exactly what deficiencies are causing the hair loss. I am losing so much hair now that my hairdresser is just cutting it shorter and shorter until I decide either to buy a wig or just not care anymore about the bald Patches.

My sleeve is very unhappy and makes loud, audible noise at every meal. My family simply no longer comment but I daren't even drink in front of anyone in public. Hopefully the upcoming endoscopy will indicate why this happens.

I have to see my GP now regularly because of the anaemia and the B12 injections are not working. We are trying to lift my Vitamin D levels.

The C diff is an ongoing issue that has resisted treatment so far. The next step to try is a faecal transplant.

The severe GERD, burning pain is being treated with lansoprazole and gaviscon.

But hey ho, I hit goal weight at less than 3 months out and am creeping down to the weight I was at 21!

I'm probably not the best reference and am particularly pessimistic lately. To be honest I do sometime regret have the roux-n-y. I have had so many complications that it just wears me down. I had a Mesocolic stricture immediately which wasn't diagnosed and fixed till a month later when I had lost 40lbs from not being able to eat. The doctors say that I lost too much weight to quickly so now I have intense nerve pain down my ulnar nerve (better on gabapentin though). I now have postparandial hypoglycemia, orthostatic hypotension (mostly better with fludrocortisone), and for the past month has had a 7% weight loss and intense epigastric pain with normal testing and am being threatened with a g- tube placement. A little over a year ago I was an overweight nineteen year old but with no health problems at all and now I'm only twenty years old with a bunch and it gets so tiring.

You must feel exhausted with all those health problems.

My family has been great, my mom often texts my surgeon when things are getting bad. My surgeon is great and we have actually worked together several times since my mom and I work in the ER and he is one of our hospitals general surgeons. We're just at a loss about what to do.

I understand. I feel that way. It wears you out. I don't have a good, supportive bariatric team so I just have to do it alone.

I have an endoscopy scheduled next Friday. I have become so phobic about hospitals, procedures etc that they have to really push me to attend and receive any sort of treatment.

GinaCampbell, i just read all the posts about your WLS journey, so sorry you have to go through all this. i hope you will have a full recovery soon!!. I live in London, UK and i am also having my WLS done under the NHS. I am having my pre-op appointment on 4th Jan. After reading your story, i have to say i became quite nervous!! No one is guaranteed that everything will go perfectly for them. One thing you mentioned which i agree with you is that they do not give much information about the risks of surgery. You have to do a lot research yourself. i read (and still read) a lot before i made my decision to go for WLS and i'm in contact with people who've had the surgery done in the same hospital as i will have. I just hope and pray that this will be the best decision i will make in my life (and not, G-d forbid, the worst!!)

Keep in mind that the majority of people who have WLS do well and have no complications.

I can only tell my story. Not to scare people but to encourage them to be realistic about what might happen post op.

I can't comment on the NHS treatment that you might receive. Hopefully it will be better than mine and my friends'.

Just be vigilant, don't rush through the process.

Don't just assume that you will just be normal after six weeks, plan ahead for any unexpected down time.

Even if things don't go to plan, after six months, things will at least be a new normal.

If this is what you really want, then just prepare mentally and emotionally.

There was so much information that I didn't know despite researching for years.

Not a sleeve girl but I originally wanted one. I ended up with bypass because I had severe gerd and it was a better option for me personally.

No regret ever, not for one second. I have a whole new life where food does not revolve around it. Don't get me wrong, I love food. I choose to really savor every morsel and I don't eat crap anymore because it actually tastes gross.

pizza, oh yes. I do eat a lovely thin crust piece of pizza about once a month and I love that I can and I love that I am satisfied with that one piece.

No regrets other than regretting I did not do it sooner. Live is full again!

I have decided to go with the Bypass over the sleeve as well. But this was because I was under the impression that it was reversible. Now a friend who had the sleeve is saying that it's not? I just don't know anymore. ☹️

The gastric bypass is reversable in extreme situations as long as they leave the remanant stomach which they only rarely do not so you'll have to discuss that with your surgeon while the sleeve Gastrectomy is definitely not reversable as the rest of the stomach is disposed of.

If you are choosing surgeries based off which one is reversible, surgery probably isn't a good option for you.
