Hello,

I Have Been Researching Lap Banding For 5 Months And Have Considered Several Different Doctors. Currently I Am Leaning Toward Dr. Himpens In Belgium. Is There Anyone Here That Has Had Their Lap Band Placed By Him? What Types Of Bands Does He Use? Any Information About This Will Be Greatly Appreciated. I Have Looked On Other Websites But Most Only Mention Ds Or Rny

Have you done a "search" on your computer for Dr. Himpens? There is a ton of info. available on him. Please be sure that you have your aftercare lined up before your banding, so you don't get any unpleasant surprises. (Like a fill dr. won't touch another surgeon's patient - a quite common problem.) Best of luck to you!

Hello there

My experience of Dr Himpens is that he really doesn't like placing the band - he doesn't agree with it! He much prefers DS or RNY. So be prepared for him to try to talk you out of it! and even refuse to place the band.

Dr Frering in France is a very god surgeon & only takes 15 mins to place it. He's worth looking into.

Like Marie said..if you live here in the US..make sure you line up aftercare in your area prior to your surgery. I have heard it many time when a patient gets banded in another country and plays hell trying to find a doc in their home town who will see them. Many docs wont touch patients banded in other countries and if they do they charge alot! Best of Luck to you? Why Belgium or France? Just curious?

I do not know personally about this surgeon but he appears all over the internet in all kinds of studies. Apparently he was one of the first surgeons to perform the band. From what I have read Belgium was one of the first countries to use the band. I would be interested to know which TYPE of band he places (midband, swedish or Lap Band).

as far as i'm aware he places swedish band (I must stress - he does not like placing bands & will try to talk you into having anothe type of WLS !)

Anyone whom i've come into contact with this surgeon has been either refused banding by this surgeon or had to "prove" that bandin is for them.... be prepared !

De Himpens charges £3,000 (ish) for banding (swedish)- but you will have to REALLY show that you ONLY want banding - he prefer's DS... Dr Frering in France charges £4,500 for MID band - UK surgeons charge aroung the £8,000 mark

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
