I had to pay 20% of my surgeon's bill in advance. The hospital wanted me to pay 20% of their bill too but I told them I would pay $800 instead because I knew that my max out-of-pocket for the year was $6,600.

to top it all off, my wife and I had WLS on the same day, so we are on the hook for $13,200 altogether.

i think it is pretty normal to pay the deductible in full before your portion kicks in. my deductible is $1000 and it went to my sleep study, which i ended up paying $1100. $1000 deductible and $100 for my 20%.
