How fast should one drink?

I am 5 days post-op and in the full liquids phase. I am drinking Water and crystal light very frequently in between meals. I take a medium sized sip maybe every 5-10 seconds when I pick it up. I do about 3 or 4 of those sips and then put it down, doing it again in maybe a minute or so.

Is this too much? Could this stretch my new stoma? I would hate if I had to sip as slowly as the day after surgery.

Thanks,

Tim

Liquids aren't bulky so it's not really an issue...however, if you guzzle you may find yourself with a big knot mid-chest as it tries to go down (not fun...don't try it). If you drink fairly normally and don't feel a "pause" as it goes down, I'd say you are okay. Remember that your gut is swollen so be gentle with it, but you really shouldn't have to take "eraser-sized sips" I'd think. Just follow how it feels....

And by the way Tim...how are you doing post-op? Have any gas pains? How's your recuperation going? I read your post the day of surgery.

I am almost a month post op and drinking is the one thing I know I have a problem with. I went real slow in the beginning, but now I can drink like I did before the surgery. I drink a lot of water. I can't quench my thirst with a small drink. I hope I am not doing myself harm. It doesn't hurt going down (unless I try to drink something after I have eaten something which is a no, no anyway.) So, I don't know what I will do after I have my fill.

Kacee, I am doing very well. I have lost 12lbs. after 1 week and I dont have gas pains anymore. I am not worrying about drinking anymore because I realized that I get no pain when drinking like I used to pre-op.
