Hi, I just wanted to ask if anyone had any regrets of having the sleeve surgery due to MEDICAL COMPLICATIONS ONLY they have to live with everyday and have not resolved over time such as chronic nausea, pain, etc. Or even if you know someone who regrets having surgery due to medical complications? Thanks

Hi, I've had issues with throwing up often. Seems like just about anything can make me throw up. Fried food, spicy food, anything too rich, eating too fast, not chewing enough and on and on. Doctor says it could resolve itself after I'm a year out from surgery. But I've talked to someone else who it didn't resolve so I'm not sure if it will ever go away. I pretty much hate throwing up more than anything else I can imagine. The only thing I regret is not getting the surgery sooner. I've never felt so in control of my eating and weight.

I have a friend from my surgeon's office who had a leak early on and was in the hospital for her first few months post op and couldn't eat anything for most of that time. She doesn't have any regrets. Even I think I would have regrets if I had to go through what she did. But we're both close to our goal weight now so that sure helps.

My GERD got worse due to the sleeve. I am on heavy duty doses of a PPI, and have had several endoscopy's done since surgery. I was on liquids for 6 weeks straight after surgery due to constant regurgitation of anything I drank or ate. I still regurgitate food and drink up if I eat too much (and sometimes when I don't) Sometimes if I eat too late in the day and go to bed, I wake up due to a burning Fluid coming back up into my throat. I carry tums with me everywhere I go in case I get one of my bouts of heartburn due to something I ate that didn't quite agree with me.

I don't regret my surgery for a second.

Were you diabetic before the surgery? How does one deal with low blood surgars after the surgery since you cant have sugar? I am diabetic so I was just curious. What do you eat to raise the level?

So how common is it to have a leak? Being hospitalized for that long of a time is NOT an option for me. How is your friend now medically?

The complications post surgery I surely could have done without. The memory loss is by far the biggest pain in the ass I had to deal with. Second would be the way I have to treat left over food. Microwaves are extremely tricky to me now. Either I'll puke it up, or it will stay down without an issue.

I just started doing research so I didn't know memory loss was an issue? What is the reasoning behind this? Too little food and nutrients? How long did that last?

Nutrients, in particular B Vitamin. I was okay about the first 3 weeks post surgery. But then a bad sinus infection which was causing mucus drainage into the stomach got me really sick. I was puking when only taking down Water let alone soft foods and liquids. I got severely dehydrated and my multivitams weren't enough. My primary doctor did some blood work and notice I have a deficeny in the B Vitamin area and got me on a prescription mult-vitamin as soon as he could. It took about a month for my memory to return to a functioning level. Its still not 100% but about 4 months ago it wasn't even 60%. And it was all short term memories too. Anything that happened within the past 2 to 3 months long term, or anything that happened that day. If I didn't write it down or recorded it, there was a very likely chance I would forget it.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
