Help always hungry!

Recommended Posts

I'm 4 months post op (almost) and I'm down probably 52lbs .

Lately I'm just always hungry I don't get why here's a typical day

Work7am

In the am i do an egg with ham and cheese on a slice of toast. I probably eat half of it.

Throughout work I drink at least 30oz of Water with is mixed with my Protein so I kill two birds with one stone.

I eat lunch around 12

Today I made a quinoa bowl with Beans corn and steak also some salsa.

I then eat a Quest bar around 1

Still drinking water

Today I ate dinner at 5

Baked potato asparagus and salmon

I did Zumba from 7-8 straight after I drank my Protein shake about 12oz

Now 10pm I'm hungry I tried to just drunk the hunger but my stomach was telling me no.

So now I'm eating what I had for lunch (i meal prep)

Am i hungry because I start my day early and sleep late or am I doing something wrong

Help!

Also I went from 201 2 weeks ago to now 207. I don't look like I gained weight (so I've been told) so I assume it's muscle because I weight train a lot. So I'm getting discouraged!

Wow! You are a busy lady.

It's frustrating. But it's all learning as you go. You are weight training so expect some weight fluctuations.

Some things to try: I'm no expert just another sleever:)

Try limiting you're carbohydrates. (breads rice potato) Carbs trigger hunger. Also slow down weight loss. My dietician instructs to add carbs once you have lost 75% of you're weight.

try vegetables with you're Protein. Fiber will help fill you up and low calorie. I snack on veggies and pizza sauce when I cook. That seems to be when I get the munchies.

Plan and pack good Protein choices and Snacks. They will hopefully keep you satisfied longer than a shake (not that shakes are bad)For some the liquid just does not seem to fill you up.

Satisfy cravings. If its salty or sweet have healthy bariatric Snacks to get the craving out of the way.

Probably things you have already herd. Hunger is different for all of us. I don't think you are doing anything wrong. It might just be finding what works to feel satisfied.

Thanks for taking the time to answer!

carbs are my weakness. I just never know what to eat in the morning that doesn't involve bread. And I was always taught starch veggie protein so that's why I chose the potato. It's so hard to get out of old habbits! I just need to prep better. I should stress I work at a bakery so I'm not always on my best behavior which sucks.

It seems like you are having to supplement a lot to get your Protein in. You should try to get more of your Protein through real food and cut out the carbs. You mentioned bread, potato, corn, and quinoa all in one day! Not to mention whatever carbs might be in your protein shake and Quest bar.

I am no carb nazi by any stretch. I don't count carbs at all. I just find that by filling up on protein, I don't have much room for carbs. I do get carbs from Quest bars and from sauces and/or breading with my meats, but I never eat stand-alone carbs.

Take that for what it's worth, though. I am a very slow loser, so maybe "my way" isn't the "best way".

Yeah its just confusing with what is the acceptable balanced plate for bariatric people and non. I'm just getting overwhelmed with what is better and what's not. I'm starting to think just eating a whole steak for dinner with no sides. So hard!

I have tried the only Protein route. Yuck! I felt deprived. I found this on pinterest . 3oz of Protein (always eat first) half a cup of vegetables and 2tbs of starch. Eat until the point of fullness. Loved this photo.

I'm six months post-op and there is still NO WAY I could eat that much food in one sitting. I can only do 2-4 oz. of meat at a time. No room for sides at all. If I tried to work in veggies or starches, it would be at the expense of Protein and then I wouldn't be able to get my 100 grams of protein in.

Me too. I'm not saying I'm eating 2 oz of each I take a bite here of everything. I don't stick to one. My NUT wants me to have variety but from what everyone's saying I think I need to cut off the starch and carbs so once this round of prep is over the next round no starch just meat and veggies.

I also find that the shakes don't keep me that full. Greek Yogurt is another. I only have them on occasion as I find I am hungry an hour later. And then I am having something like tea to keep my mind off of it. I try to eat every three hours. I do better when I stick to a schedule.

Good luck-

Yeah I think I can easily fill 12oz in my belly of Protein shakes which sometimes I could do more. And then I'd be hungry. I feel like I snack to much. I mean nothing bad but I don't think I should be eating as much. It sucks because everyone's different and one way isn't the right way.

I eat 6 times a day and that really helps prevent me from ever feeling hungry. I have a Protein Bar for Breakfast, a cheese stick for a morning snack, 2-4 oz. of meat for lunch, greek yogurt for an afternoon snack (with some granola mixed in on workout days), 2-4 oz. of meat for dinner, and a Protein bar as a late snack.

Some days I do the same except I can't do yogurt it kills my sleeve. I try not to eat like this because I feel like it's not the right thing to do but I guess starving isn't one either.

Hey Aribay! I was worried of always being hungry after the surgery so I did a ton of recipe hunting to prepare myself. I'm currently still on mushies but I do feel hunger through out the day. Here are some ideas I've found to help and keep me satisfied:

  • Grilled chicken (or even chicken teriyaki) with raw baby Spinach
  • Chicken Sausage (found @ Sam's club) and Eggplant Italian Bake (use lowfat cheeses and you won't even miss the pasta!)
  • Prepared tuna on Saltines (can only have 5 and I'm stuffed!)
  • Chicken salad with celery onions and a little mayo
  • Tuna Patties pan cooked with a little chipotle mayo
  • Scrambled egg whites with cheese and 2 turkey or chicken sausage links (Applegate makes some really good ones)
  • Roasted cauliflower tossed in hot sauce (kinda like buffalo wings and barely any calories)
  • lettuce wraps (like a sandwich but no bread)
  • In times of weakness....try making a mini pizza with a soft tortilla, higher in carbs but it'll give you your fix

Here's a link that will hopefully help some of the carb cravings http://www.ibreatheimhungry.com/2013/09/25-of-the-best-cauliflower-recipes-on-pinterest.html

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
