Lap band with Plication Question

Recommended Posts

I have been approved by my insurance company for surgery, and I am just now waiting for the dr to call me with a surgery date. I know I am getting the band, but wanted to get some advice about also doing the plication. I am 40 years old, and have a starting weight of about 305. Does anyone have any pros and cons of plication you could share with me? I appreciate any help you can share!

I didn't know about the plication when I got my band placed or I would have asked for it, however you can Google or look for it on this site if I were you I would ask the Surgeon to explain in detail , however I still have lost almost a 150 lbs , just my issues with thyroid and these last few lbs seem to not won't to leave my body & it was the best thing I did for myself , good luck on what you decide on your surgery & Journey, just remember to follow the pre op & post op your Surgeon gives you & you will do good.

If you go to the main bariatric pal page and scroll down, you'll see a list of other surgeries listed. Lapband with plication is one of them. It may be more helpful in answering some of your questions as well. Best wishes to you.

Lapband with plication is a procedure in which the band is placed on the upper stomach. Then the lower stomach is folded in half and an additional 10 to 12 stitches are placed there. This gastric sleeve surgery is done without cutting the stomach. This is actually a procedure which can be reversed because the part of the stomach is not removed, but only stitched. It also does not compromise the nutrition absorbing capacity of the stomach. Also plication does not involve the use of staples so there is no possibility of a leak from the staple line.

@@jlj1110 some good advice above.

The plication mimics the idea of the restriction (smaller container) of the stomach in the way that the sleeve does. However it does not as stated above involve removing any portion of the stomach instead it is folded in upon itself and stitched in place sort of like a football. There for it does not have a malnutrition component to it. Since there is no removal of the larger curvature of the stomach the glands that reside there are not removed. This is an advantage with the sleeve that the placation does not have.

Plication is reversible and sleeve gastrectomy is not. Both my husband and I have been banded with plication and we were able to see the difference in the decrease of volume in the food that you are able to consume right from the start after surgery even without having a fill in the band.

If plciation is an option for you I would strongly suggest doing some extra research, though I would tell you that I am very happy I was able to have the procedure done with my band and at the time the study was still in the trial or beta phase.

Best of luck to you! Let us know how it goes!!

Another thing good about the plication is it pretty much eliminates bandster hell. I love my band/plication.

My surgery days is Aug. 18th. When they scheduled the date, I asked if it was too late to go with the plication and was told they have to contact my insurance. I have my 2 hr pre op seminar Monday, so will find out then. I would like to have the plication if possible now, but I will still be very happy with the band too!

They should cover it, I mean after all their gonna be in there anyway , also you might ask the Surgeon if he/she is going to also do a hiatal hernia repair , I Personally had bad gerd, heartburn & reflux before the kind where you had to find where you had to let it go , if you know what I mean , sorry had to put it out there, after surgery I haven't had it at all .

I know it helped me , just a suggestion I wrote down everything I wanted to ask and asked if I had any more questions that I forgot to ask could I call or text and ask if I needed to , my Surgeon said no problem he could tell I was scared , but I was at ease when he said no problem.

I have band with plication. It's a little extra assurance and tool for weight loss. You're not only make a small pouch in the upper stomach with the band. You're also making a smaller lower stomach, which makes you full quicker.

It was still experimental when I had the surgery, so the doctor did not bill the insurance for the additional procedure. I'm happy with my band/plication.

Wishing you luck on your surgery!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
