Please pray for me!!

Recommended Posts

Well today I saw my surgeon (Dr. Naaman in Houston) and he agrees that I am a good candidate for the lap band. I completed all of my pre-op requirements for surgery, per Cigna,...psych eval, dietician consult, 6 month medically supervised diet (I actually did 7 though), diet history for the last 5 years, and 2 recommendation letters indicating that this is medically necessary. My BMI is 43 and I have GERD, chronic back pain, chronic knee pain, borderline high blood pressure, and depression. Sooooo the insurance girl at the surgeon's office said she will submit everything to Cigna in about 2 weeks...why it will take so long, I don't know because she has everything there in my chart, but anyway, after she submits she said that she will be in touch with Cigna every 2 weeks until they make a decision. The finance lady said that if I have everything that Cigna asks for, that they usually will approve the surgery. So please pray that I get approved! Also, do you think I should call Cigna at all during the approval process if the insurance girl says she is going to call every 2 weeks?

Peace out...

I am trying to get approval too from Cigna, but they still haven't made a decision. I was told to write a letter to them explaining why I needed the surgery and the struggles I have had with my weight all my life. Did you have an exclusion on your policy? I think my battle may have to do with the exclusion on my policy. They said I can fight it, but I don't know how long to keep fighting! Good luck and I will pray for you!

Fortunately I do not have an exclusion on my policy. I hope that all goes well with your appeal. Thanks for praying for me and I will for you. GOOD LUCK!

I have cigna too and I found out on Tuesday that I am approved. My BMI is 43 as well with no cormobidities My surgeon's office submitted all the paper work to the insurace on Feb. 23. I called Cigna every week after that and last week I called every day. Still it took them 1 month to make a decision. Yesterday Cigna called my surgeon's office and I was able to schedule a my surgery for Wednesday, April 4, today I went for my pre-op cusultation and tests. I am very excited and getting everything ready for Wednesday:clap2: :whoo: :whoo: :whoo: :whoo: :whoo: :whoo: I think you'll be approve as well.:gluck:

I'm surprised your surgeon would even put you on the books before hearing back from your insurance company. My surgeon will not do anything, other than the initial consult, until we hear from Cigna.:girl_hug:

Peace Out,:hippie:

I called the surgeon's office today and as they told me last week, they probably will not submit to Cigna until NEXT Thursday. I don't know why I am complaining, the lady there told me this was the case the day I had my first consult. I was just hoping that maybe she would have submitted sooner. I am just so tired of waiting...and not to mention I am beginning to believe that I will fail at this too if and when it finally does happen. :)

Peace Out,

So I called Amanda today and she said everything was faxed over and she had a confirmation :) . She said it usually takes 3 full weeks to hear anything back from Cigna and that they (my surgeon's office) would handle everything from here and that it would not be necessary for me to call Cigna at all. So now comes the hard part of waiting. Just wanted to share with everyone to see if you wouldn't mind sending positive vibes my way...

Peace Out

I know I have seen other threads where people have had to hire attorneys who specialize in the rights of obese people, maybe you could start a thread asking for some help in this area. Another question, did your primary care doctor or surgeon write a letter of medical necessity that was submitted to your insurance? And if so, maybe you should look in to appealing before you do anything else. Look around this forum and or start a new thread. Someone here will be able to help you. By the way, what insurance do you have?

Peace Out

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
