A lady at the one support group I attended before surgery had a lot of hair loss. She said it was because she didn't get enough Protein after her bypass surgery. I asked my doctor about it, and she said it could happen, but it would have to be a lot of protein that wasn't eaten. I was scared to have my hair fall out, so what I've been doing is making sure I eat a protein (meat) for every meal. I'm 6 months post-op and so far so good :)

Hi. I am almost 6 weeks out. I haven't had any hair lost "yet", but I am just waiting. If you search hair loss on the above search there are tons of forums about people loosing their hair at different stages and for different lengths of times. For quite a few people it does happen.

Supposedly it happens between 4-8 months after surgery if it will. I am about four months out and just noticed last night that I was suddenly shedding way more hair than usual. Not to worry, I've heard it does grow back. My hair is pretty thick anyhow, so maybe in the meantime I can go a few extra weeks without a haircut.

I started losing my hair a few weeks ago, and it's an ongoing issue right now. Every time I brush my hair or wash it, a bunch of my hair comes out. I had surgery Oct. 24th, so the hair loss started when I was about 3.5 months out from surgery.

I started losing at 2 months, a lot of people start losing at 3 and it can last thru month 6.

There are lots of opinions why this happens - some say it's a by product of the surgery itself, others say it's because of low Vitamins or Protein.

There are also lots of theories on how or even if you can remedy the hairloss. Do a search on this forum and you'll find hundreds of threads about this.

My doctor said whatever I lose due to the surgery will grow back. She OK'd taking Biotin and Folic Acid. I use Nioxin shampoo. I also use a product called Toppik to cover up the thinning spots. I also concentrate on getting my protein minimum every day.
