Hello everyone! I haven't been revised to RNY yet and I've stated so in an earlier response. I was banded b/c I was soooo afraid of having RNY. At that time I weighed 246. I have diabetes and it runs in my family. I am still a diabetic and after losing 44 lbs and regaining 15 lbs back, I now weigh 217. Afraid or not, I've started my RNY process. I should have done it before but hind sight is 20-20. I've had so many family members that were tragedies to this decease including my mother and a couple of siblings. How many of you have diabetes running in your family or a parent. I think that having RNY at 217 lbs is worth the chance of getting rid of diabetes.

Hope this helps you some. I was banded in 2010 and still had to take insulin and still had high A1Cs. My mother was diabetic, my grandmother who died from it in 1943. My uncle also developed diabetes at 73 and was a reasonable weight and excerised by walking 1-2 miles daily. Now back to me, I lost 40 lbs with the band, but had to have it removed this last May. I lost an additional 5 lbs. while awaiting RnY. At the time I had surgery 9/11/13 I weighed 211. I was also taking anywhere from 100-125 units daily of insulin and metformin. My average right now is about 35-38 units daily and my numbers are alway below 150, normally anywhere from 80-120 and no metformin. I will probably be to a normal range with no insulin, as the numbers keeping dropping, in about three or so months. I might add I'm 71 and have had diabetes since 1995 and on insulin since 2001. Hope this relieves your concerns.

YES! It did. It helped to ease my mind and to know that there are others out there with diabetes that can relate to what I'm saying. I thought that having the band and eating right, that my diabetes would just go away. Now I seriously know that this is my last chance at it and that I MUST follow all direction with food and exercise to rid diabetes and for it to never return. Thanks

If it doesn't, then I will still be determined to lose the excess weight. My biggest fear is losing total control of the diabetes and my health deteriorating after surgery.

The awesome thing about the RNY is that it helps with diabetes. Many patients find immediately that they no longer need to take diabetic meds. I am 6 1/2 months out. I no longer have to take insulin and my oral meds were cut in half. My PCP told me it won't be long before I will probably be off oral meds. Until you have the surgery, try managing your blood glucose level with eating right and exercise. I'm speaking from experience when I say it's not easy. When will you be having the surgery? I have no idea when I will have surgery at this point. My psych eval is Thursday. I see my PCP the 21st. And then we go from there.

I went in taking 2 shots of 34 units of lantus a day and 3 shots of 17 units of apidra on at each meal. Also 2000mg of metformin.

I came home taking One shot of lantus in the am if my sugars were over 90. I took 3 of those shots and 2.5 weeks after surgery my doctor took me off everything. I rarely see a day over 80 at wake up. I was 288 lbs had been diabetic for 10 years. Mom and grandmom aunt and great grandmom all diabetic.

Everyone's body is different. For me diabetes was standing in my way of having children and carrying a pregnancy to term. In 6 months I will get the go ahead from my doctor to try getting pregnant again. My family doctor and obgyn urged me to have this surgery my only regret was not listening to them sooner than I did.

Gray dress two months pre op. Black dress 7 months post op.

I have 2 children already but we do want more. I couldn't see myself carrying another baby being as heavy as I am. I was miserable during my last 5 years ago.

My mom, grandma, aunts, uncle... All diabetes. So my gestational diabetes diagnosis wasn't a shock in 2009., the GD resolved itself after having him in 2010. The shock came last year when my son was 3, routine lab work came back with an a1c of 14. I tried controlling it via diet and exercise but it wasn't budging a bit! I was put on oral meds. Then Victoza. I LOVED the victoza! Except for a side effect. I have gastroparesis and it was making me sick. But it served also as an appetite suppressant. So I was totally okay with losing weight even if I was sick and keeping my sugars down. Dr stopped the victoza and started me on lantus. Here I am today...

I had my RNY on December 3, 2013. I started at 414 pounds and have been diabetic for about 18 years. Before surgery, I was taking 3 shots of Novolog before meals (50 Units) and 65 units of Lantus Solostar twice a day PLUS 2000 mg of metformin daily. Diabetes runs in my family (grandfather and father). I have lost 71 pounds and currently weigh 343. My sugars went into the 400s while I was in the hospital after surgery so I came home on a sliding scale. I went to the doctor 6 days after surgery and he took me off ALL of the shots because my HGAiC had come down from 9.4 to 8.3 just since my pre-surgery blood work. I feel so much better. It's amazing how bad the insulin and my sugar levels made me feel and I didn't realize it! I fully expect to be diabetes free very soon and you will be too! I wish you the very best of luck!

I had surgery 12/31/2014.

Like another poster here, my diabetes began with my pregnancy in 2005. It stabilized after his birth but returned in 2007. Since then, I've had two late miscarriages. I'd love another baby, but I just turned 43 so it's too late for me

My first pre-op apt was in Feb 2013. At the time, I was a non-compliant type II diabetic. My A1c was 9.7. I brought that down to 7.2 by the surgery date. I took 2000 mg of metformin and 35-40 units twice a day of novolog. I also took losartan (cozaar) for high blood pressure and kidney protection.

Since surgery eight weeks ago I have lost 62 pounds and am off ALL medications. My blood sugars run from 95 to 115.

Thank god for this surgery. I just wish I'd done it sooner.
