Anyone From Sacramento?

Guest zsflower

I'm from the Sacramento area. We have a group here that meets once a month and you're welcome to join us. Send me an email and I'll give you all the details. Most of us had our surgery in Mexico, but we've had a few banded in the US. One of our "regulars" was banded in Sacto.

I was banded in Sacramento, by Dr. Bruce Wolfe at UCD Medical Center, December 10, 2002. He is no longer at UCD, he left this month, either retired or moved to another hospital in private practice, I have heard both versions. Were you banded in Sacramento, or are you planning to be?

Hi Seaotter and Dee:

Our group is organized under Sacramento Bandsters @ Yahoogroups.com. You might want to join to get information about when and where we meet, as it varies from month to month. We meet once a month, usually on a Sunday afternoon, sometimes on a Saturday, the place varies. We welcome any new members!

Hi All,

My apologies... I really don't know how to post to this site. I was trying to post a response to this thread and ended up creating yet ANOTHER thread on Sacramento. I recently posted a message about other pre-banders and banders in the Sacramento area... unfortunately I didn't see this posting before I created mine! -- Sorry

I tried to check out the Yahoo group: Sacramento Bandsters @ Yahoogroups.com... But I couldn't locate it. Is it still active? If you still have monthly meetings, how can I find out more?

I recently attended an informational seminar for Sacramento Bariatric Medical Association and Dr. Bruce Wolf is now working there and still doing Obesity research at UC Davis. He was not very positive about the Lap-Band. When I asked him how many Lap-Band procedures he has done, he said about 50 and then went on to say how he doesn't really feel that it is very effective and it works for some, but not for others, blah, blah, blah. I kind of tuned him out because he wasn't present for the beginning of the session and the other doctor (Machado) who is the director at this facility was very positive when she presented Lap-Band as one of the options.

I met with my primary care doctor today and he is putting in the referral to have me seen by Sac Bariatric... said it might take 3-4 weeks. I have Cigna HMO and am a bit scared that they will not cover the surgery. I have a current BMI of 41.3, but no real co-morbidities except some joint pain and back pain. We will see... I am determined to get the Lap-Band and will go to Mexico if I have to.

Thanks,

Anne

I was just recently banded on February 9, 2005 by Dr. Waldrep. The procedure was done at Sutter Roseville. Their practice (Dr. Waldrep and Dr. Lublin) are still fairly new at placing bands. Dr. Lublin feels very strongly against the band and tried to get me to switch procedures. Healthnet HMO covered the entire process. I just paid my co-payments.

I just joined this group. I was banded in Mexico in October 2004 and noted on this thread that there is a Sacramento Bandsters group. I can't find it when I did a search on yahoo. Is it still active? Thanks.

I was banded by Dr. Waldrep in Roseville on 2/9/05. Here is the link to the Yahoo Sacramento bandsters group:

Dr. Cirangle, from Lap SF has opened an office in Sacramento. They have been offering a monthly support meeting. Whether it's strictly lap band, I don't know, I haven't been yet. The next meeting is Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at 7pm, located at the Sutter Cancer Center, 7th floor, at 29th and L Streets in Sacramento. Here is the information for their Northern California support groups:

I'm new to this site, but saw the Sac thread. I am from Folsom and was banded on 1/10/05 by Dr. Laura Machado w/ Sacramento Bariatric. Dr. Bruce Wolfe is also with this practice. As Anne said, he's not a big advocate of the band, mostly b/c of the unknown and he's been doing bypass for YEARS! Dr Machado, on the other hand, is wonderful!! She's an advocate of getting healthy... band or bypass! I found her absolutely wonderful and would highly recommend her to anyone. The office staff is awesome too. I'd be happy to answer any questions on the practice.

Thanks for the Sac site. I was banded by Dr. Kuri in Tijuana. I called lapsf about a fill but they don't fill other doctors' patients anymore. All the same, I prefer to go back to TJ because as a self pay, the plane ticket usually costs less than the fee to a local doctor.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
