How bad is it?I am hoping to be sleeved but have recently learned that may not be an option due to 2 forms of severe reflux. The mal absorptive portion of RNY is what scares me most. I want gastric surgery to be healthier not to trade my problems in for new ones, ya know? To top it off I already have malabsorption issues due to IBS, not so much that it affects my life but bad enough to have lost a child due to a condition linked with a lack if folic acid... something I took more than required of during pregnancy. Furthermore, we plan to have another child after I lose weight as my current health makes it impossible and unsafe.

I don't yet have a surgeon so I was hoping to gain some insight here. How big of an issue is it or can it be? For those of you with major absorption issues, would you do it again? We live on a very tight budget, how much do you all spend on supplements? Any further info would be much appreciated! TIA!

I can't give you much expert advice as far as malabsorptive issues long term as I am only 4 weeks post op, but the Vitamins are a bit expensive, however, I don't spend near as much money on food :). I get my Vitamins from either Celebrate or Bariatric Advantage. Both are specially made for bariatric surgery patients. You can check them out online and price about how much they would cost you. I wasn't on any medications prior to surgery so taking pills daily is a change for me, but i know that no matter what may come in my future life that I am will be healthier overall than if I had stayed at my morbidly obese weight.

I hope that helped at least a little. I feel like your GP might even be able to help you begin to consider if RNY is a viable option for you before you find a surgeon.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
