Ramadan & First Year Sleeve

The holy month of Ramadan is just around the corner. For those of you that don't know - its Islamic month where Muslims fast from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset.

For those of you that observe this month, how did you handle fasting your first year of being sleeved. I'm 6 months out and already have problems with my water/protein intake.

I know people that are ill are exempt from the fasting part, but since I've been 12 years old I've been fasting each year.

Thanks, ladies.

I'll fast up until my liquid diet. I'll have to do it just a few days a head of my surgery. I

Please let me know how your fasting is going Ms. Cali. Here in Minnesota we'll be fasting for 16-17 hours. Yikes! :o

InshaAllah, all of you fasting will have a blessed Ramadan.

Allah accept it from us all.

Hello everyone.. How was your first day of fasting? Mine was great. The only problem with me today was the lack of coffee. After I broke my fast I had a nice cup of coffee and that hooked me up.

No offense to anyone, but shouldn't this thread be in the special interest(religious) section???

Just say'n!

Could be! But anyway my fasting is going great! Haven't been sleeved yet maybe next month but I'm done all my testing.Wish you all the best.

No offense taken but I think a thread can be in any section.

Ramadan Kareem. This year may be a bit soon to fast. You could attempt it. I would wake up and drink a LOT of water while preparing the sahour meal... or drink a protein shake for your meal. Then at Iftar, maybe you could break the fast with water.. then wait 20 minutes before eating. Then continue your hydrating during the evening. and eat again just before you go to bed. If you find you can reach your protein goals and hydration goals doing it this way then you should be good to fast.. if you CAN'T reach your protein and hydration goals then you would be exempt from fasting this year since fasting would be detrimental to your health.

The reason why I used this section is because fasting is not specific to Islam or any religion per se. Yes, I'm a Muslim and for me it's religious. But there are many others that fast for medical and none religious reasons.

I would like any and all opinions/experiences about the topic. After all, fasting is directly tied to our diets which we all deal with after the sleeve.

Of course certain threads would be in appropriate in certain sections.. for example, A post about choosing a doctor for a Tummy Tuck, would not make sense to be posted in the Exercise section... But a Ramadan thread in the food and nutrition makes perfect sense, as do all the "how will I make it through Christmas" threads that will appear in this section five months from now. Now for in depth religious discussion I agree they should be in a religious section, but simply a mention of a holiday does not mean that the thread needs to be relegated to the religious section.

Suzy that's exciting to hear!

How long where you sleeved when Ramadan came last year?

Also' date=' where you able to get in your full Water and Protein intake or did you come short?

I would think it would be very easy to fast - almost like cheating - since you don't feel hunger anymore. :-)[/quote']

It was only a few months before my first Ramadan that I was sleeved. I love Ramadan because it gives me a big kick start to start losing more weight quicker.

I have an off-topic but somewhat related question. For anyone who is in the Middle East (or has family there), would you say that people are on the Internet more or less during Ramadan? (I am working on a project and wondering if it's better to send it now or wait until Ramadan is over.) Thanks for any ideas you have. I also am enjoying this thread bc I have been considering fasting a couple of days a week for dietary reasons. I am about 5 months out from surgery. Thanks!

Hmmm good question - when I was living there about 13 years ago - they didn't have Internet yet - so I can't speak from experience.

But from what I'm noticing from my friends on Facebook I would say about the same.
