Hey Lori,

So sorry to hear that this has happened. I realize how devastating it can feel when you find your band has slipped.

I was diagnosed with slippage back in September. It had probably been that way for several months. The doctor did a barium swallow to confirm slippage after I kept having to go back and have fill removed, as reflux kept coming back and I was just staying too tight.

They removed all the fill for two weeks, but when they added a little bit back, the symptoms came back as well. I spoke with my surgeon and he said it would be best just to replace the band.

I went in this past Friday morning for the revision surgery. As the port was fine, he didn't have to touch that. He just took the old band out and put in a new one. Surgery went fine, except her accidentally made a small puncture in my stomach. That's sewn up now and I'll be on antibiotics for a month to ward off infection.

After the revision, you go back to life as it was just after you were banded the first time around. I'm on liquids for the next 3 weeks, then introduce mushie foods.

The good thing is there's not nearly as much pain this time around, because the port didn't have to be messed with. Sewing that into the muscle caused a good deal of discomfort last time.

I did manage to put back on quite a few kilos between the slippage and the revision, but the surgeon sounded confident that that will come back off.

Keep your chin up - while it may feel like its the end of the world, its definitely not. Make sure to talk to your doctor about the different options available.

All the best! :)

Can anyone describe the signs/symptoms of band slippage?

I keep thinking it has slipped, because I can eat almost a full portion, but when I was at the drs office in sept. He said it was fine.

They do all their fill under fluroscopy so they view the sites with each visit.

I still worry that eating this much is not normal.

The signs can be different for each individual. For me, it was the reflux. Also, I could get down crap food (chips, sandwiches, etc) but not a good ole healthy salad (which honestly, I love). Also, after it was diagnosed, I found myself vomiting a time or two. Not pb, but full on projectile vomiting (think the exorcist) :/ I'm not sure if this is common or not though.

Some people say when they slipped, they couldn't get down anything. Others say that could eat anything.

I've not had a fill under flouro, so I'm unsure as to what this shows to be honest, but if you do suspect a slip, talk to your doctor.

What fill level are you currently at?

Thanks so much for uer replies I seen my slip under swallow test using barium however I came in concerned about reflux and regurgitation I never expected a slippage devastated is a nice word about how I feel... I am suppose to be on liquids for a week I really don't know what this is going to prove because when I go to eating the pouch will dilate again causing slippage. If anyone knows the theory behind this liquid stage and how it will help me please explain to me the Dr. did a endoscope and I was to dazed to recall what he said but the discharge papers describes me as having gastritis, pouch diliation and slippage .I am just not understanding what this all means help would be so wonderful thanks Lori

When my band slipped it just slipped a little at first. At that point, I just had MUCH tighter restriction and I had to have Fluid removed. After 3-4 months, the lower portion of my stomach slipped up through the band and I ended up with a huge pouch so I could eat very large amounts of food. At that point I had to get a whole new band.

Lori,

I've fixed lots of slips (some were my patients, some from other surgeons), in experienced hands it's pretty straightforward. I see too many surgeons just taking bands out when they slip. This is usually not necessary, you should NOT have to lose your band.

Good luck,

You say you do not want to go on another diet surly the band is just one big diet it only retricts the food volume and the speed at wich you eat food it does not make food choices?

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
