Anyone here nearby Raleigh, NC? I've been thinking about attending some Meetup groups but thought I'd check here, too.

I in Apex! Not sleeved yet but hopefully next month!

The only group I have found is one that meets for the County employees here in Durham. We should probably make our own where we all get together and hang out. Or maybe meet for lunch...at a sleeve friendly place or a park where we bring our own lunch. LOL

Not in NC and this has nothing to do with VSG but I am applying to jobs in NC mainly in research triangle area...can people on here tell me some decent neighborhoods to look at to live...haven't actually gotten any jobs yet but beginning to look...I love Durham but only visited once

Durham is nice, you just have to be careful about the neighborhood. Briar creek is nice, but pricey. Cary and Apex are nice too.

Just looked it up and it is cheaper than where I live now but everything is cheaper than ct.. what I dont like is it says its 99percent white only and I like a little more diversity

Which town did you see that? Cary is pretty diverse with a decent sized Indian community as well as an Asian one. Durham is hit or miss depending on where you go (safety is still a very big concern here) And Raleigh is decently diverse depending on the neighborhood. But this is the small town South! Lol

I looked up briar creek. I am white and my fiance is black so we want an area that is accepting of interracial couples and biracial children (when we have them)...south of the mason dixon was originally out of the picture because ive had too many bad experiences and came across ignorant people (just a few ruin it) but I figured its different in well educated areas like the triangle

My parents are an interracial couple who decided to give me lots of siblings and we've never once had a problem. Not to say it's not out there but NC is surprisingly progressive for it being in the South. I'm sure you guys would do fine if your paths lead you here!

Most of the larger cities here in NC are pretty progressive. The smaller towns you might have SOME issue in. I'm biracial myself so I tend to been more keen on these things. My parents never had any issues in Raleigh and I see plenty mixed race couples in Durham. You do have to be careful on the area of Durham you're looking at, as well as Raleigh. But Durham is a beautiful city with lots of cultural activities year round. Cary and Apex are a little more quiet, but not as diverse as Durham or Raleigh.

That's really good to know, I went to the Raleigh office for my pre op appt. I will be sleeved June 26th

Hi there...let me jump in before people who don't live in Durham mislead you ( quite common among many with Wake county addresses), two of my buddies are cops Raleigh cops but live in Durham and they will be the first to tell you the crime in Raliegh is just as bad as it would be in Durham. Durham is smaller in comparison to Wake county. If you are looking for diversity let me tell you that Cary, Apex, Chatham county are NOT diverse as it relates to AA. Absolutely not! Those regions tout diversity due to their huge influx of Indian population due to our heavy focus of technology in the RTP area.

As one poster mentioned you have to know where you are when you are in Durham...same with wake county...my neighbor was robbed by gun point pumping gas in a neighborhood in wake county....he did something stupid and punched the guy at the risk if his life and the guy started running. He chased him along with an undercover cop that was in the store of the station. Mind you my neighbor has lived in Durham for over 20 years and never had a gun pulled on him.

So...if you choose to move to Durham, there are great areas to live. Unfortunately the Downtown area is booming now....and the cost to live there has escalated, the next location is the Southpoint mall area which is very close to RTP....I work in RTP takes me 15 easy minutes to get to work EVERYDAY. My co-workers who were told Durham was a bad place to live...who moved to the before mentioned other locations, complain everyday about 15 min drives that take them 45, let there be a weather event (ice is common) And it's worst....I just cruise home and Instead of 15 mins.....it takes me 30... Compared to 1-2 hours with bad winter weather. icy roads are tough to navigate even for transplant Northerns.

Durham is a college town, home of Duke University....so if you move in that area which is not far from downtown....you will deal with that youthful group. Durham is a huge foodie town, were chain restaurants struggle because of the excellent culinary delights we have here. I promise you will not be disappointed.....even with my sleeve I can eat and lose...but the food I eat is good for you...we are a big farm to table town. There several other communities that are great in Durham....but not as close to RTP. Google Durham Visitors and conventions Bureau. That site has lots of links!

Durham is the place of cool and diversity is embraced, but if you are looking for a homogenous place....where everything looks and feels the same, those other locations many be better for you. I caution you to get all the info you need....ignore the cry wolf, chicken little comments about crime here I have been here all my life and love my Town never had a crime issue!

Just wanted to warn you some work in Durham...buts then travel back to their communities...they focus on the 20% and miss the best 80%....they don't really know Durham well. Some grew up and moved away...may know more....but I caution you on there advise too....why would you tear down your hometown....sad.

Thank you that was real insightful. I'm actually looking in the entire research triangle..the job I applied to is at Duke. I'm 23 so I like the youngins and I wouldn't mind doing a phd there while I'm at it

Yep I worked at Duke for 10 years. Living near campus is expensive, but lots to do and I believe at your age you would enjoy all there is to do. Good luck!
