How soon until "major"exercise

So I have been training for a half marathon (walking), but I will only be 11 days out from my surgery. Everyone says that walking is important, but I am guessing 13 miles, even at a slow pace, will be a bit much :). While I know this particular race is a wash, when did everyone begin/contunie to exercise beyond small laps at the hospital/home. How did you feel?

Hi there. I started walking around the block once or twice about 5 or 6 days post-op. At around week 3 I started going to the gym for light weights. I'm about 5 weeks out now and I've been steadily kicking up the walking by starting off w/ a light jog and sprinkling in some workouts for the upper body w/ weights. I am going to be walking a 5K this weekend and starting a fitness bootcamp when I'm about 8 weeks along.
