Passport question?

I know I've seen it before but can't find the post now. Did anyone go to MX without their passport, and used the application and their Drivers license? My passport won't be back in time for the trip but coordinator said it is ok to use the passport application with receipt of payment and my driver's license. Did anyone else do that? and have any trouble?

Honestly...I didn't have a passport, or even apply for one. Legally speaking, they can't keep a US citizen out of the US. You may get a finger wagging, but they will let you in. When we got to the border, our driver knew the border patrol guy. My husband and I had our birth certificates, driver's licenses, SS cards, marraige license...everything!! Our driver handed him our birthcertficates and driver's licenses. He didn't even look at our birth certificates and just scanned our driver's licenses to make sure they were real and that we weren't wanted for any crimes..he didn't ask us any questions or really even look at us. He too had been sleeved ( both our driver and the border patrol) and they were conversing and laughing in Spanish the entire time he spent looking at our driver's licenses. They were laughing about how they were both getting too skinny and they needed to start eating chocolate icecream in between meals!! So, I would say don't worry about it....sure, our hearts were beating a little fast as we pulled up to the border patrol guy's booth...so, I am sure that your receipt of application for your passport and driver's license will be fine!! I've not ever heard of someone having a hard time getting back into the US. Good luck to you and besh wishes w/you upcoming surgery!!!

You can cross the border with just your driver's license and certified copy of your birth certificate, you do not even need your application for the passport.

I had surgery in July and my passport didn't make it back in time either. I was so freaked out that I wouldn't be able to get back into the country. I was fine though. I had a copy of my passport application, driver's license and a copy of my birth certificate ( not even a certified copy). They can tell if you have applied for a passport in their system because the crossing guard gave me my passport number. PLus like someone said they can scan you driver's license to see if it is authentic. You'll be just fine. :)
