Help! Pre-op liquid diet

Hello,

I'm on the fourth day of the liquid diet for pre-op. I'm using Carnation No Sugar Added shakes. They taste fine. But I'm starving. Is there ANYTHING I can supplement this with. My doctor told me 'off the record' that I could eat thanksgiving dinner --- ?? which surprised me. So, if I could break the diet for that , can I add 0% greek yogurt or something? Anyone else have a brutal time with the pre-op part? Thanks for the support.

I was banded on 11/16/10 and doing well. I was on a liquid diet of Opti-Fast for 9 days prior to the surgery and by day 3 I was so sick from hunger and caffeine withdraws that I couldn’t take it. I had terrible headaches and was vomiting – so I finally decided to eat. I kept the meals light and kept my daily caloric intake under 900. I had my last meal at 6pm the night before the surgery. The surgery went great. Aside from some bloating and pressure after the surgery (from the air they use), I haven’t had any problems. My dietician told me the reason for the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver - so that is why I kept the meals light, small and low calorie.

Definitely check with you physician as it seems everyone has a different protocol. Good luck!!

Well I am in the 5th day of my 2 week clear liquid diet and I to am having some bad headaches and I feel really tired due to no calories. I do eat all the sugar free jello, bomb pops, and as much clear broth that I can stand. And that helps to curve the hungry feeling. I must say that I did have a small plate on thanksgiving, but i am back to liquids today. Stay strong and good luck.

Hi,

I am on day nine of this very strict diet! I am drinking Isopro powder with skim milk!:( I was sick with nausea and headaches. I am over that now but, I have to say that I am very hungry and havein't lost a lot of weight! Or at least not s much as I thought I would! About 10 pounds! I drink only zero calorie drinks non carbonated and one cup of coffee per day! :P I am hungry too and feel tired but, I just try to keep thinking of the prize! My surgery is on December 1. I wish you the best and let's hope the next few days pass quickly for us! It will be worth it!:D

I'm on day 9 of my liquid diet and I did fine on the first 2 days but days 3 and 4 were a bit rough...I was feeling very weak. I'm happy to say that only lasted those 2 days. At this point I am pretty much used to it but my question to you is how much protein are you taking in each day? My dietician wants me to have 80-120 grams a day and I tend to end up with around 100 or so. I think everyone tolerates it differently - maybe I'm lucky but I haven't had too much trouble with the diet for the most part....

Ugh yes I am on day number 2,, I am doing the Carnation IB No sugar for Breakfast then I am also doing the slim fast shakes. I am having broth and sugar free Jello also.. I have a headache today thats just drivin me nuts and just feel kinda sluggish. I am making a point not to complain to anyone but man this is hard.

I havent start my pre-op diet yet but I'm going to use Cambridge Nutrition Shakes . They are similar to Opti Fast just much more afforable. 3 shakes a day given you get your total nutrition for the day. I've drank them before and I didn't experience any headaches or nausea while drinking them. Its the head hunger that you have to get over. That was biggest battle before, Im sure it will be my battle this time, too. Good luck on your journey.
