Realize Band Slip

Recommended Posts

Found out yesterday my band had slipped. Not sure if I blame the band, myself or the surgeon. Guess it doesn't really matter. I've had problems with too much vomiting for quite sometime. So that could be my problem of not loosening up the band. But clearly the stitch came loose that holds the band in place. My surgeon had only done 5 or 6 bands at the time he did mine ( not my choice, limited on who I could use with my insurance company, he had done lots of bypasses). So the revision will be easy. Once all the fill was removed, it was very strange how the band completely changed locations back up to where it should have been, just maybe a not quite the right angle, but it was almost like a 45 degree change. So they just need to go in and put a few stitches to hold it in place. So I will have about a month of no fill, although this doesn't concern me too much as I had really had lots of problems with restriction, it just kept getting tighter and tighter, which I'm sure was the band slipping now in hindsight. So my system needs a break and some healing time, plus I'm almost at goal, within 15 lbs. So I'm not deterred at all and not blaming it on any one things. "stuff" happens.

p.s. bandiversary was June 1, my original goat was to reach goal by my birthday on June 23. I won't quite make it but that's okay, too. I wouldn't even be remotely close without my band.

Revision surgery is July 9. Can't wait to get this over with. I miss having the restriction and my buddy (the band) reminding me to stop eating.

hi Trish

Sorry to hear that this happened but glad it's an easy fix. Congrats too on being so close to goal.

thanks all!! Can't wait to get this on the move again. I so miss my buddy. although not having the band filled and being ms. piggy has forced me into the gym...so there is a positive outcome to all this. Now my incisions from the first procedure, except for the port incision, had finally faded. So guess I get a new set of incisions...but at almost 60 years old, it's not like I'm wearing a bikini anyway...lol.

I will find out more on Tuesday at pre op consult as to how long before they can start the fill process...if I had my way, they'd leave some in at surgery..but that's not going to happen...although some surgeons do leave fill in at surgery time, but my guy is sooo conservative. So I will be a the gym a lot over the next month..lol...but with free tanning booths, I'll be oh, so tan..:)

Avoid the tanning booths. You don't want to prolong your life through losing weight only to cut it short with skin cancer!

Update on revision. Temporarily postponed. After discussion with PA and surgeon and what they were planning on doing, (and also surgeon was having to postpone due to death in the family), we've decided to refill and slowly bring it back up, assuming no problems. All he was going to do was either put in another stitch or undo the flap of stomach that the pull over the band to hold it in place...undo that and possibly change the location of the flap. They believe everything is still in tact. So PA put in 4ccs today and I will see how it goes and if all goes well, in a month I will go back and have them do an X-ray and if band looks llike it's where it should be, they will slowly over the next few months bring it back up to restriction level.

But I have a strong feeling that I may have just been overfilled. and then with the throwing up, forced the band into a position it didn't need to be.

I had the option to go with the other surgeon, but I think I want to try this first and use revision as my last option. But I am going to stick with only the PA doing the fills, so that at least there's consistency with who is doing them. I don't think the surgeon does as many and the PA says that he usually is able to pull more out than the surgeons. Because if I count all the ccs that were in there, I thought I should have only had 7 inserted...well somehow or another I ended up with 10cc, unless my body is mysteriously producing fill all on its own..:):)

Right now feeling okay. Staying on a soft food diet for a few days to get it a rest after getting the fill. Neither one lectured me on the 8 lb weight gain.

I've read some users on here that just by removing the fill and letting everything rest and get back to it's proper location that it can fix the issue and PA even said they're had some patients that that has done the job. So we'll see. I'm just glad to have at least part of my buddy back :):)

I know it's probably all mental but just knowing that there's fill in there, my food grazing/craving cycle is non-existent right now. So onward I go...whoo-hoo :):)

We've received one common request over the last year+ from members on LapBandTalk who've undergone or are interested in the Realize® Band procedure: An online community they can call their own.

Following the success of LapBandTalk and VerticalSleeveTalk, we're happy to announce that we've just launched the beta release of the Realize Band Support Community, located at RealizeBandSupport.com . We're confident that you'll find what you're looking for at the new Realize Band Support (RBS) Community.

If you're currently a member of LapBandTalk or VerticalSleeveTalk, you can just log in with your current credentials, there's no need to sign up for a new account.

Log in now to join the REALIZE Band community and become one of our founding members!

Wondering if Realize® Band is the right choice for you? Looking for information and community after your Realize Band Surgery? Look no further. You'll find everything you need at RealizeBandSupport.com .

I started LapBandTalk the night I came home from surgery mid July 2003. Following my own Lap-Band® procedure, I was looking for information and community support. I came across a few helpful web sites, but they all lacked a sense of actually belonging to a group of people who share many similarities, struggles and habits.

After years of researching and reaching out to the community, we've been able to build the most comprehensive online resources for all types of Weight Loss Surgeries. Hundreds of thousands of registered members contribute amazing stories and useful information to our pages.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
