Dumping Syndrome is "a good thing"!

Yes I revised. I had to get rid of the band and then I had the RNY. This occurred on August 25th. I seem to have hit the 3 week stall however and hope that the weight starts moving again. :bored:
  2. Hi - sorry I didn't get back to you so quick. I was debanded and RNY'd on the same day - August 25th. I dropped 17lbs in 3 weeks but haven't lost anything more yet. I feel great though. It is like my insides are just relieved not to have that band anymore. Even if I didn't lose another pound having the band gone was the best thing for me. We can definitely be friends... how are you feeling? Is it getting anybetter?

Dumping Syndrome is "a good thing"!

Nanook - I have a question for you. I am 4 weeks out from the surgery. I quickly lost 17lbs in the first 3 weeks but am now not appearing to lose anything. Did this happen to you? I am not eating very much so I am praying that it is just my body adjusting and not that I am destined to find failure. I am so glad to have the band gone however, my insides feel so much better.
  4. Just wanted to step into the roll call. I was told last week that the band must come out and the surgeon feels a conversion to bypass would be best. I have had terrible reflux and ulcers ever since getting the band. I am interested in what everyone's experience post op is like...

    Just had my band removed...

Did anyone have a revision done at the time of band removal? That is currently my plan.... The surgeon wants me to have another endoscopy first to make sure all my ulcers are healed then wants to proceed with a revision. What was recovery like - specifically switching from band to bypass?
  6. Just found out today the band must go. I have had 4 cases of gastritis and developed esophogus ulcers from the acid reflux. I am three years out and have only lost 20lbs, much like every weight watcher attempt I have made. I unfortunately was told today that the band complications are too much for me to continue having the band. They have offered me a conversion fully covered by insurance... the whole reason I got the band in the first place was because my husband was too scared for me to go through by-pass. Now I feel like I have no choice but to switch and I have to convince him that I am going to be fine. He isn't going to like it but I have to do something.... Any words of wisdom or advise to how to break it to him?

Band has to go - now the struggle begins

Is there a risk of reflux with the sleeve as well. Since the restrictive process is what caused my reflux in the first place. I never had reflux prior to surgery. It wasn't food choices that lead to the reflux according to my surgeon (not to say I was perfect but I was really good most of the time). He says that the restrictive process changes the way your food moves through the digestive system and that the restriction caused the reflux. So I would think that the sleeve being a restrictive process as well may lead to reflux and ulcers as well.

Band has to go - now the struggle begins

My insurance does not cover the sleeve and I would have to locate a surgeon in my area who does them. Not sure which way to go but am starting the process and should know more in the next few weeks. First step is a repeat endoscopy to make sure my ulcers are gone. I will keep in touch Deb

Band has to go - now the struggle begins

Nancy- Talked to the husband last night. First step in getting this ball rolling. He is in agreement but wants to meet with my doc and NP to make sure they understand where he is coming from. I set up the appt already knowing how he works. So I begin all my retesting next week. I have to have a repeat endoscopy to make sure the ulcer has healed, blood work, ekg, etc. Meet with a nutritionist and a psychologist again, etc. I guess you have to go through everything again for insurance purposes. I will keep you informed of my progress. Deb

Band has to go - now the struggle begins

I gave it what I call a huge try. I don't think he realize how hard this had been on me. I am going to have a real heart to heart and discuss what this means to me. Good luck next week please post how you are doing and any special issues you run into as you are converting. thanks
  11. Hi Just found out today my band has to come out and we are looking at a revision. My surgeon wants me to do a rny due to my complications with ulcers, gastritis, etc. I gained 20lbs since they let everything out of it 4 months ago and have to have another endoscopy to ensure my ulcers have healed. I am seriously considering the revision and not just a removal because I know I will gain the weight back. How are you coming with your decision?
  12. I have had my lap-band for 2.5 years and in the first year I lost 70lbs but have not lost a pound since. I have had 4 cases of gastritis and recently a case of esphogitis with esophogus dilation. Every case of this has resulted in me having to have the entire band emptied wait several weeks to several months and start again. No sooner do I get restriction that I then develop the gastritis or esophogitis and the cycle begins again. This last case was so bad I was vomiting blood and had to undergo Endoscopy with biopsies. Has anyone had this experience and what has your surgeon said is the big plan? Mine just seems to say rest it longer this time and try again, but at what point do you say that is it and I can not tolerate the band? Has anyone been converted or being converted to a by-pass due to band failure or issues such as mine? Any info would be helpful.... Thanks Deb:crying:

    Esophogus dilation repetative cycle

I misspoke I have the 4cc band. I am currently completed unfilled and am taking prilosec twice a day because of the ulcers. I am scheduled for another endoscopy and upper GI in a couple more months. They really wanted me to take a 6 month break. I do not have a slippage but I had esophogus erosions which resulted in bleeding and constant nausea and vomiting. Perhaps it is band intolerance. My primary wants me to go to a tertiary care center instead of the community hospital where I had it done for a second opinion. Probably a good idea. Thanks for the support.

    Esophogus dilation repetative cycle

hi Cleo's Mom- I have never gone above 3ml in a 5ml band but sometimes the gastritis happens even at as little as 1ml. It just seems to be that anytime I have to go on antibiotics (frequent sinus infections) or eat even one trigger food (ie- coffee(even decaf), spicy food etc.) then I can set it off. There is some talk that it never heals in the first place. This time I have to have a repeat endoscopy before I can have any fill put back in. It just seems like a never ending cycle.

    Removal & Change to RNY

Hey- I would always try to get some removed and give it a little rest before I charge back into surgery again. Surgery means recovery time and starting all over again. I did not have port spasms but I had spasms in my opening as food would try to go through - it would result in multiple multiple burps, pain and discomfort until the item went thru or I threw up. A little rest may be all you need. Do you know how many cc's are in your band right now? Deb

    Removal & Change to RNY

Chance- Was the band just too tight? Had you had any fills at all? I had some of those symptoms and when I had my upper GI the doctor said the band was too tight and insisted on taking some out. I did and suddenly I am losing weight again - he claims that too tight is just as bad as no band at all because you go for the easy stuff like ice cream, pudding etc. because that is all you can get down. Advil

Hi - I wouldn't take any advil because it can cause bleeding during and after surgery (any kind). But double check with your doc. GOOD LUCK!!!
  19. I think it all depends on what goes on in your surgery. I had mine out and stayed out of work for 2-3 weeks. I had some impacted stones though and they had to be dug out so my pain lasted a bit longer. I actually thought GB surgery was worse than lapband surgery. I could have gone back to work on a Monday after a Thursday surgery with lapband. My situation may have been complicated as I was also 8 weeks post C-section when they took the GB but I think you need to wait and see how you feel.
  20. I agree with many of the posts here. I don't drink at all with meals - if I do then I PB or worse throw up. May have to do with restriction as I am 3.2 ml in a 4ml band. I sometimes fail to quit before the 30 min rule but always at least 15 mins before. My doc says to wait 1 hr after to start drinking but sometimes I wait two because I feel like there is no room to drink.

    April 2006 Bandits September Challenge

Well gang - I have made it to 13 workouts only 2 to go to make the challenge but I don't want to slow down now so i think I will go for the gusto and work out at least 20. But I think I am building muscle and not moving the scale as much. Anyone else feel this way? My workouts are 45 mins long usually. Maybe I should start lifting weights.

What to do with too big clothes?

My lapband/gastic bypass support group has a quartely clothing swap. I have saved up two huge bags which I will take and lay out for anyone who wants them to take. I am hoping I can find some stuff for the next few sizes as well. when I heard this I was so psyched what a great way to recycle old clothes.

    Coke drinking poll

My doc told me carbonation will stretch the pouch. Does anyone know if there is truth to this? I am too scared to find out so I haven't touched the stuff but about once a month or so I would love a sip of Diet Coke.
