OK. This is going to sound Keto-ish but it's the truth. Your body only runs off of burning sugars or fat. When we were babies, our bodies would burn fat first for fuel. Fat-burning bodies are like candles and slow-burning so you stay satiatiated longer, sugar-burning bodies are like microwaves...instant (carbs are also sugar), which is why you crave more sugar (feel hungry) quicker. Your body adapts to either way...like an addict. Our natural state is to use fat as fuel first then sugars. But, if you give it a quick fix with sugars long enough you will have to retrain it to burn the fat first. That's why we forgot to eat when we were younger and could go long periods of time without food. As we aged and leaned into our processed sugar addictions, we were told that we could still eat sugar and be thin if we just eliminate fat from our diets. This is such a backwards way of thinking, especially now that you have re-set your body and only have a small pouch in which to nourish it. Train it to burn fats and eliminate sugars/carbs from your diet. You have a one ounce stomach to pack full of nutrient, vitamin, mineral rich foods. Use it wisely. Good fats are healthy and necessary. Avocados, almond butter, butter, WHOLE cottage cheese, etc. Fat free is devoid of a lot of the beneficial stuff but still has processed stuff and sugar in it that your body feels freaked out and in starvation mode about. Your body will never have a chance to burn fat like that. Plus your skin will look dry and old. You need oils and natural foods. Don't be afraid of eating like a whole healthy person. You will stay satisfied and satiated longer and place your body in fat-burning mode (ketosis). Your skin and hair will look great and your body will respond better. No more fat-free. It's been a minute since I updated anything, but here it is! I am now in a size 5...never thought I would be in that size without a 2 in front of it!!! Still trying to cope with the reflection in the mirror, because she's so foreign to me still. I have moments of just being down, because I no longer look the same. I miss some of the physical attributes I used to have. I feel like i'm in middle school again when I look at myself...flat chested once again (never thought that would happen). Contrary to the hype...SQUATS DON'T WORK (I lost that attribute as well)!!! On the good side...i'm much healthier and now have a normal BMI and have much more energy. So all in all, even though I have had some struggles and dealt with some stomach issues throughout this journey...i'm still happy with the decision I made to go through with it.
I want to say thank you, to those of you that have been so supportive and have been following my progression with me[emoji873]️

My 2nd surgirversary was on Thursday, it was also the 3rd anniversary of having my trach removed. Just 5 months earlier in October 2015, I suffered from sudden cardiac death and was dead for over 5 minutes. I was revived after receiving 4 to 5 shocks from and AED( automated external defibrillator). My airway was damaged while being intubated which brought on the emergency tracheostomy. Being that I was outside walls of a hospital when I had my cardiac event, the survival rate for sudden cardiac death is 3%. You guys are looking at a miracle who is 130lbs lighter.

but Monkfruit is great! The kind I get is slightly less sweet then sugar, very mild aftertaste but not unpleasant (reminds me of gum), when mixed with other flavors is almost unnoticeable (especially compared to anything with nasty aspartame)

Hi! This is my first post! My name is Raven and I'm 5'8 and 315 pounds. I had my first appointment last Friday and went over my insurance and hospital requirements. I'm required to do 6 months of watched dieting and weigh ins. Plus a whole other list of stuff like a sleep study, get cleared by a psychiatrist and take 3 hours worth of computer personality tests, have an exercise evaluation, see a nutritionist monthly, get my lungs and heart checked, and more. It feels like so much stuff (worth it of course) but the 6 months wait feels like lifetime! But I've been fat my whole life so I guess it's doable. [emoji23] They said my goal weight as far as they are concerned is 198 because that would be me out of the obese marker. I can't believe the process is started!

Kmama5 reacted to ProudGrammy in I buried my 15 year old grand-son
    LONG
My wonderful, wonderful 15 year YOUNG Andrew died January 3rd. I'm still having trouble
processing. This was a terrible, awful, avoidable accident. Andrew was video chatting with 4
other friends. The jist of the story is....kids were talking, laughing, daring each other about "silly"
things. Not sure of all specific details (we will never know)
They were all teasing/taunting/joking with each other - story involving a neck and a rope - how tight one
could pull , won't say any more details, use your imagination. One child saw most of what was going on screen.
He screamed, ran to his mother and then called 911. Police followed to look into the situation. My
daughter was confused about any possible problem with police/ went upstairs - found Andrew in bedroom
closet. This boy, grant? is devastated about what happened. He didn't want to go funeral/hasn't been
able to talk to my daughter yet. This must be a terrifying nightmare that he will never forget.
Andrew was/is such a terrific young man. Handsome, smart/funny. Any and all people were very lucky to have
known him. He lit up a room. He was/is a terrific son/brother/nephew/friend and of course my grand-son.
his sister, 18 year old Morgan - is handling things the best she can. She lost her younger brother!! How terrible is that!!
She has a large support group of friends. She cries so often - but luckily friends are there to hold her.! my "little" wonderful
11 yr young Ethan has more trouble wrapping around the situation. Understanding what was going on. He slowing is understanding
that his big brother will never come home,
my daughter has a large community of friends in her neighborhood, many people from temple - so much
necessary support. She has 4 long time friends from different states that came to support her. BTW - her temple
holds 300 people - standing room only. Shows how much my Andrew and his family are loved.
We are so sad, terrified about this tragedy. We will all always love our Andrew. Forever and ever. The problem
now is dealing with the aftermath. Losing Andrew - the brother, grandson - friend but for my daughter and
my son-in-law - their son - i can't imagine how they feel. - they have friends and family at their house, one
after another - so they haven't been alone. Next week, and after, two more friends will be their for her.
But eventually they will be all alone! Their lives will never be the same. they are seeing a therapist individually,
and the whole family. They also are looking into finding a group of parents who have lost etc etc
thank you letting me unburden myself on you all.
    kathy

Kmama5 reacted to ??????? in Dietician Stuff...help me not be a jerk...
So I've arranged my first dietician consult, which is interestingly done remotely via WebEx video conference (not relevant to this post, but just interesting). Any who...I was given a lengthy PDF packet to read through regarding general nutrition and as I read it, I find I don't agree with some of the information. I've been living relatively strict keto, High Fat/Moderate Protein/Low Carb for nearly 2 years and I'm afraid I'm going to get into this consult and butt heads with the poor person. Not on purpose, but I really don't want to change the way I eat because I know what happens when I eat the stuff that is considered OK. I get bloated, I gain weight, my face gets puffy, my feet get swollen...etc. My body likes keto and most "health professionals" aren't on that bandwagon. Any words of advice from anyone that's gone through their diet consults would be awesome. I know the best thing is to just smile and nod, but I know this girl is going to want active participation.

Pregnant I might have been able to laugh off, I'm 72. Had a little kid ask me "Are you fat or are you a woman? If his mama wasn't near I might have suggested he go play in traffic, but wouldn't 've able to live with, myself if that happened. Maybe he just didn't have" no upbringin' " as my grandma would say.

Kmama5 reacted to Swanton_Bomb in Why is everything so sweet?
You would think that with intolerance to sweet tastes, especially artificially sweet ones, being so common after bariatric surgery that some of these companies would make their products less sweet. I bought a bariatric decaf cappuccino mix and I was really looking forward to it as an alternative to a cold shake. Even after thinning it out and adding extra decaf espresso powder it feels like I'm sipping a cup of old-school Sweet n' Low packets. You can always make something sweeter but it is so hard to make things less sweet when you can only drink a few ounces at a time. I understand products like Premier being sweet because they aren't marketed to WSL patients, but even the specific Bariatric products are ultra sweet. Back to adding unflavored whey to everything, I guess.
