  1. I think I'll be an October Sleever also! I've got 3 phone visits with my nurse left, a second psychologist appointment and my surgeon appointment. I should be done late August. I've been preapproved, so it's really about setting a date at that time. I'm having some struggles thinking about going into the holiday season. Not because of the food restrictions, but more the activities. I also wait ALL year long to cook that blessed turkey dinner. It's just the cooking the dinner. But, I could put that dinner off until xmas and let my daughters/daughters-in-laws do Thanksgiving this year. I can also play it by ear and see what happens. But, as stated, I believe I'll be an October Sleever. Getting psyched, scared, terrified and I say all that with a big grin on my face. I'm doing this to help control my diabetes. good luck on your adventure!

  3. Before anyone says to me "this isn't a diabetes site" I totally understand. Not trying to get diabetic support!! But, my main health concern is my diabetes (type 2). Just wanted some input from fellow-diabetic weight loss surgery champions. I am still in the decision making process, haven't even had my first consult with a nutritionist yet. My BF of 20 years is a double amputee (type 1) so I've seen the end result. My BGs are good, but I'm aware that the older I get the more difficult that will be to control. I'm about willing to do most anything to bring that under more permanent control. My A1C started at 13.11. I'm now controlling it at 6.4. Haven't been over 7 for 3 years. I've was diagnosed about 3.5 years ago. I've been able to drop 60 pounds in that same period but have plateaued, with 60 - 80 pounds to go. Actually moved back up the scale this past cold winter. Nephropathy started for me about 3 months ago. My pharmacist daughter said I won't get that because I'm so controlled. Well, my disease proved her wrong. I think if I can get my weight to a healthier level for me I might be able to escape some of the horrors of the diabetic disease. A diabetic coworker had weight loss surgery 10 years ago, dropped most of her excess weight. She rebounded and has regained plus. It's very sad. I spoke with her briefly this week and she said that they don't tell you that you can't ever eat carbs again. She said every time she eats carbs she gains weight. I do not know what surgery process she did. I'm concerned about her story as I have a strong tendency to go hypo if I don't eat at least 100 carbs a day. I know my body pretty well now as it concerns my diet. Kind of a science experiment some days!! Has it been easier for you to control your BGs after your weight loss surgery? Have you been able to get off some of these horrific meds (I'm on Metformin and Victoza)? Does the stricter carb diet make you go Hypoglycemic more often? How many carbs are allowed in your diets (I eat about 130 to 150 per day)? You all have so many success stories here. I'm an information gatherer and here seems the best place to ask these questions. I appreciate the time you take to help me out!
  4. You all are great. So much information here. I wish I could take a week off of work just to read it all. Thank you. I'll lean on you all!!
  5. Thank you for your feedback. I think I'll go ahead and get the garden. The ground is prepped and I'm too late for peas and lettuce, but hopefully the tomatoes will come in so good I'll be sick of eating them! Like with anything I'm hearing, listen to your body. It'll tell me when to stop!
  6. Wow, I was thinking I'd be out of work for 4 weeks. I'm a developer so subdued environment. I'm impressed, just don't overdo it and end up back at hospital.
  7. I'm thinking of getting a community garden in my neighborhood. I live in an apartment and miss gardening. Had plans to run to Farmer's Market in Saint Paul and get my plants this weekend. I'm so excited. I love heat and humidity so I'm anxious to get my hands and knees dirty!! My insurance and surgeon have said that the average wait time for surgery with them is 3-4 months. I just got all my paperwork in and am waiting for a first consult with a phone person. So, I'm thinking Late August-Early September for my surgery date. And you gardeners know that the big tomato and cucumber crops start coming in around that time. If I have someone to drive me to the community garden spot after surgery, how long will it be before I can move around enough to garden? Lots of stooping and grabbing. I'm considering waiting to do a garden til next year, or holding off a month or two for surgery? Thoughts.
  8. Just worked with my Insurance folks as you all suggested. I'll have to meet with a phone counselor 5 times in the next 10 weeks. Plus a psychologist and nutritionist. She said it'll be about a 3-4 month process. So, I'm thinking late August to Late September.
  9. What do all these numbers mean? I'm a newbie, forgive me! HW: 256 SW: 238(4/25/18) CW: 228 GW: 165
  10. I'm wondering how long the process took- first appointment with doctor to the end. I've got my referral to the surgery center for my consults and stuff. I'm really motivated right now and afraid that as it gets further out, I might not be so anxious. I don't have a surgery date. Hoping end June-August. Wonder if that is to quick to expect. I'm a grandma of 7@ 53 years old. Would maybe like a barbaric buddy to get some feedback, be able to chat when I start feeling stressed. My kids (no husband) kinda support me. My boyfriend of 20 years likes my big butt. He's concerned he'll be with a different person, but he supports whatever I decide. I was diagnosed with "the diabeetis" as my kids call it about 3 years ago. I initially lost 60+ pounds. Still had another 40 to go. Said I would NEVER get back over 200 pounds, and here I sit. 219 on the scale this morning. My mom would like to see me just continue to diet. I'm exhausted with dieting and with diabetes management. I just want some help while I still qualify.
