  1. Hi everyone. What is the best form of contraception you've been recommended? Or, what have you been using that has been effective? I have been on the pill for 11 years, no problems, ever. Came off it for one month prior to surgery and re-started again this month. My surgeon didn't mention anything else in regards to contraceptives, but I've seen a lot of stories of women who get pregnant soon after surgery. I'm sort of worried that my go-to method might suddenly not work. They say the pill is like 99% effective if taken correctly. Does WLS decrease the effectiveness?
  2. I've been a bad patient and really only took it consistently for about 2 weeks. Then took it a few times after that but really haven't taken it this week at all because I forget but also haven't had any reflux or anything. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  3. Hi everyone, Has anyone experienced any nausea post-op? I'll be 4 weeks out on Friday, been on soft foods since 11/22. Since Sunday I've experienced intermittent nausea during the day. Also more burping than usual. Not sure if it's because I restarted my BC pills Sunday, I stopped my omeprazole around the same time, a combo of the two, or something else entirely. It's more annoying than anything but sometimes if I drink Water it'll spark the nausea.
  4. My surgeon said I can go back on the pill as soon as I start my period... just playing the waiting game! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  5. Hi everyone, I was sleeved 11/11. I'm 2 weeks post-op. My period was supposed to come this week, but it's no where in sight. No PMS symptoms or anything either. I'm definitely not pregnant! This is also the first time I've been off the pill in about 11 years, so I'm not sure if that has something to do with it. Anyone experience delayed/absent period after WLS?
  6. Any idea how low or how intense one should be in ketosis for? I bought test strips. I was in ketosis for one week pre-op and I've been in ketosis ever since (sleeved 11/11). Like, really really dark on the test strips. Is there any danger in this? Should I work on getting out of it? My WLC has not mentioned anything about this topic so I'm not sure what I should be looking for. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  8. Yes I'm on once daily omeprazole and it does help a bit. My Calcium carbonate Vitamin also helps. I just hope this isn't forever because I hate waking up with fire in my chest at 3am every night. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  9. Hi guys, I'm Day 5 post op and looking for some encouragement. I'm having a real hard time adjusting to this new stomach. I have crazy reflux; which I've never had before - it wakes me up at night. My stomach is so LOUD too. It's hard to get all my liquids and Protein in because nothing is appetizing. I think about broth and want to vomit. I know I'm ONLY five days out, and I think it's still too early to call it buyers remorse, but I'm seriously not having a great time recouping at home. 10. Does anyone miss food, or eating food the way you used to? When did you get used to eating the "new" way? I have vsg scheduled for this Friday. I think it's really starting to hit me. Don't get me wrong, I want this. I've come this far, I'm not backing out. But I guess I've realized that I won't be eating the way I used to. I could easily see myself getting frustrated after being "done" with a meal after a few bites. Then again, I'm in the middle of my preop diet and I'm constantly hungry so maybe that's where these thoughts are coming from. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  11. Hi everyone, I'm getting sleeved in 2 weeks! Starting pre-op diet Saturday (no idea what it entails - going in for NUT appt on Friday). I'm having a lot of anxiety about succeeding at this, and doing it right. Not so worried about the surgery and immediate post-op, because I know I can't do much about how my body reacts to a major surgery. It is what it is. But the weeks and months after... I'm worried I won't acclimate. I'm worried that I'll never re-learn how to eat food, or get bad reflux, or will get gallstones. I've done so much research on this beforehand, and I know what I'm SUPPOSED to do, but I'm scared I just will fail miserably in actually doing it. Really wondering how much of this I will learn naturally and how much of it I have to be 100% conscious of at all times. Every post-op person on these boards seem so... "with it" and that they've figured it all out. I'm afraid of not being one of those people. Can someone tell me if my fears are valid? Am I just crazy?
  12. That is what I'm most afraid of immediately after surgery. They ask in the pre-admission testing if you're prone to motion sickness and I said yes. I'm the person that actually uses the little barf bags on planes because my motion sickness is so bad. When I go in for surgery, I'm gonna ask them to give me all they got. I probably should be been more descriptive - I really want to know symptoms weeks and moths after VSG. Like, do you throw up if you eat too much? How did you acclimate to your new eating habits? Did you end up with reflux where you did not have it before?
  13. Hi everyone, My surgery is 11/11 and I'm not sure if I'm just freaking myself out, but I'm sort of intentionally reading up on all the bad post-op side effects that can happen. Though maybe this is a better place to look than Reddit For those of you who are post op, what was your worst symptom and when did it occur? For example, did you vomit a lot, how soon after surgery did it happen, and does iftstill happen to you?
  14. Do you think I'll still be restricted as to how much I can lift after 3 weeks? Supposedly I'll be good for soft/pureed foods on 11/22 (or at least that's when the scheduled appt for that is). I'm wondering what real solids I'd be able to eat (if any) by then. We're going to San Diego and it's always been a dream of mine to have a "real" street taco. Alas, I don't think that's gonna happen
  15. Hi everyone, My surgery is scheduled for 11/11. I was invited to a work conference across country 12/3 for 3 days. I would really love to go since every time I've been invited, something else has always come up to prevent me from going and it may be my last chance this year (budgetary reasons). It's 3 weeks post-op from my surgery. I'm going to talk to my surgeon about it, but just wondering what everyone else's travel precautions were? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  16. Hi guys, I'm just curious as to how many people here are the primary cooks in their family. It's just me and my husband, but I do all the shopping and 95% of the cooking. He can make eggs, grill (which we only do in the summer) and easy stuff like a frozen pre-made skillet dinner. Handling meat is very scary for him (LOL). I'm not bitter, I enjoy cooking and it's been a hobby of mine for a number if years. My favorite is making big Sunday dinners for us and maybe a few friends. So that being said, I know a lot is going to change once I have VSG (scheduled for 11/11). For a while my husband and I will probably be eating different things, but after some time, I'm curious to see if the change in diet will change how I feel about cooking. I'm not "worried" that I'll miss the food itself, so-to-speak, but I guess that I'll lose a passion that I once had. For example, we are (way, way past) due to purchase a new cookware set, and I'm kinda sad and wondering if I should even bother since I'll kinda be just cooking for hubs and I'll be on liquids and soft foods for a while. For me, it's not just the food itself, but the creation and work that you put into the food that makes it enjoyable. Then again, this type of thinking is probably why I need WLS in the first place! Any insight or tips as to how I can handle this transition better?
  17. Nov 11th sleever here! I also have similar fears. The only comparison I have to this is when I had my wisdom teeth removed and I was incapacitated for a week+, though not sure if that was the surgery itself or the pain killers I was on after. All I have left is pre-admission testing which includes a barium swallow test, and one more f/u with NUT, Psych, and my surgeon each. 38 days can't go by fast enough! I'm passing the time by enjoying the weather (October in New England is amazing), and trying to get a jump start on the pre-op diet. I've cut out carbonation and now I'm working on cutting caffeine and trying out the chewable Vitamins to see what I like. Trying to also lose a little weight pre-op so I'm going to the gym more and meal-prepping for the week, so I feel a LITTLE more productive about it instead of feeling like I'm just sitting around. Your date will be here before you know it!!
  18. MA here - I found the group. If I join, can my other FB friends see that I've joined? I have a lot of family and friends on there that don't know and that I don't plan to tell until **after** everything's said and done
  19. Hi everyone, My VSG surgery is scheduled for Nov. 11 and I'm so excited! I just finished my pre-op "classes" - I guess it really hit me that I'll be on multivitamins for the rest of my life. Perhaps I should have done a little more research on it, but I thought multivitamins were temporary for sleevers because there isn't the same malabsorption like the bypass. My surgery center recommends a multivitamin with iron (2x/day), B12 (1x/day), Calcium (2x/day) and a vitamin D3 (1x/day). That's a lot! And I can't take them all at once because it affects the absorption. And I can't take them all at once because it affects the absorption. Will I ever be able to pare it down to maybe a single multivitamin a day? I currently take a multi everyday, so that's not a big deal for me, but that's just so many pills to remember.
  20. I had my pre-op class today and checked the status with the insurance coordinators. I'm approved!!! Nothing has come in the mail yet but I had them write down the authorization number for me. I'm so happy! :) Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  21. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App. I understand completely. When you are petite your weight can seem "low" to some but your BMI can actually be high. I am around 5'2" so I was 238 at surgery. Feels real good to be off medications. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Yes! I'm only 4'10" and weighing 198lbs gets me to a BMI of 41.4! I feel like a lightweight compared to some other people but I'm still a 1x shirt and size 16/18 pants. Shopping for jeans is a nightmare. I still get the "but you're not THAT fat" talk a lot. 22. This is how I feel too. I've been at my job for 5 years and I do work with a great bunch of people. But I've been the fattest of the bunch for all these years, and when I lose weight, particularly at the speed with WLS, they will know something is up. I've told my boss for now just because I feel like it's right for her to know exactly why I have to miss work for all these appointments and will need time off in a few months. Fortunately my schedule is super flexible and she'll let me WFH after the surgery for a bit. She's super supportive, and I think everyone else will be too. I think it's better to tell the rest of them after it's said and done so I won't have to hear "I know a person who knows a person who DIED from this" or "You can gain all the weight back" or "You're not THAT fat, you don't need surgery". I've heard that last one too many times.
  23. Hi everyone, I'm in the pre-op stages of VSG right now. I have a tentative surgery date of 11/11/2016, and let me tell you, it can't come fast enough! I have a ton of appointments scheduled from now until that date, and I am an anxious mess over it. I'm not usually an anxious person, but because this is something that is so detrimental to the rest of my life, combined with the fact that I want it so badly, I'm terrified the rug will be pulled from under me. Between the fear of denial from my insurance (I've previously posted about it), to the potential of them "finding" something in the pre-op tests that would prevent me from having surgery (ex: hiatal hernia, for which I'm going for a barium swallow test), to something totally dumb like what if my car breaks down and I can't make it to one of my appointments. The people at my WLC are very nice, and when I voice my concerns, they don't seem very worried. I can tell they are well-versed in what they do, so maybe my fears are unfounded. I feel like this would be too-short a time to see a therapist separate from the WLC psychologist, as I'm less than 2 months away from my surgery (if all goes well). Was anyone else as anxious as I am? Whenever I go into the WLC, I feel so assured and positive, but once I go home I start to have these negative thoughts that some act of God will prevent me from doing this.
  24. I am currently struggling with this too. Check out my thread "who did you tell?" for more answers! Right now I've told my husband, best friend, and my boss. And I told my boss at this moment only because I have a butt load of appointments I'll need to schedule around work. She's totally on board. I'm going to take it as it comes. I will probably tell the rest of my family (select members) closer to the surgery date as things become more finalized. Other people I have no intention of telling. It will definitely be awkward because even though I've lost weight in the past, it will be nowhere near the amount that WLS will help provide. I've always been the "fat friend" so I think some people will certainly suspect I've had surgery, or am otherwise very sick lol.
