    Got a date... Chickened out!

So I also thought “but what if I could do it myself”; I had before, but I couldn’t keep it off. Our bodies are very very good at maintaining weight. I got the sleeve because after years of research, I’m convinced that it’s virtually impossible to buck millions of years of evolution with willpower. There’s a great podcast called the Weight Loss Surgery Podcast. Before you make a decision, consider listening to the episodes with Randy Seeley, a researcher who studies appetite and hormonal systems, and the ones with Walter Medlin, a bariatric surgeon who ended up getting the surgery himself. Episode 69 deals specifically with the fears people have about WLS. You may still decide to back out—I almost did—but it’s great information to have!

    Got a date... Chickened out!

Hey there! I felt EXACTLY the same. I avoided answering when the surgeon’s office called and would send it to voicemail. Honestly the main reason I went through with it was because I’d been talking about it so much, I felt like I’d seem like a coward. I had my surgery October 13. It was so easy— much, much easier than getting my wisdom teeth out! I was so afraid I’d be nauseated forever; I haven’t been queasy once. I was terrified of food intolerances; I’m only 3 weeks out, but I’m eating pretty much anything soft with no problems. Now, I did have pain when I forgot we aren’t supposed to use straws, but I just took a walk and then belched a few times and was good as new. I can’t make your choice for you, but I can tell you that I was scared too and was utterly unprepared for how NOT hard recovery has been. Good luck, whatever you decide!

Is my goal weight too ambitious?

I was wondering myself how to figure out a goal weight, and then I heard about an app called Get to Goal. I heard about it on the Weight Loss Surgery podcast with Reeger Cortell--which is AMAZING--and I found it to be really helpful and scientifically based. You enter data on your age, weight, and health, and it gives you an approximate trajectory of where you could end up. Of course, folks can always be outliers, but I really liked how it handled it scientifically. Good luck!

    Feeling too good?

Hi! I am so glad you posted this. I feel very similar to you! I'm 9 days out--had my surgery October 13--and I feel amazing. I was tired for the first couple of days, but now other than some minor irritation at my incision sites I feel 100% back to normal. I'm easily able to get in all my water (I get some gurgling if I take too big a sip, but I can drink "normally", just not in gulps). My surgeon has sleevers start on soft foods at one week, and so far I've had no problem eating small portions of pretty much normal food. Right now I am taking breaks between bites of tuna salad with Triscuits (which are explicitly allowed during the soft food stage in his plan, since they mush down to nothing). If I hadn't lost 11 pounds in the past week with no feelings of deprivation, strong hunger, and all the accompanying pains of starving like headaches and dizziness, I'd think he'd left my stomach in! I'm eating around 1,000 calories a day, which feels like a lot? I've also been exercising though, at least a mile walk a day for the past 3 days, and shorter walks even from the day after surgery. I'm just telling myself that I knew I could *lose* weight--it was the keeping it off that I could never do, and this surgery is a tool to help me with that. I seriously have told my husband worriedly more than once that I feel like it shouldn't be this easy. I only took the narcotic pain meds the first day and then tylenol for another day and a half. I haven't had a moment of nausea. It's amazing, and I feel simultaneously incredibly grateful and yet scared that maybe the surgery won't work for me as well as the folks who are struggling more early on.

    Post surgery side effects

I didn't get that from surgery, but I've gotten it from throwing up before. It takes about as long to heal as a bruise does (since that's pretty much what it is, minor bleeding just under the surface of your skin/eye tissue). I hope you heal quickly!

    Nausea after surgery?

HI jcb123! I just had sleeve surgery *this* morning at 8:30 (done around 9:30), and nausea was my biggest fear. But I didn't actually have ANY nausea after the surgery, and I still don't! I feel pretty normal, in fact--just tired and achy like I did too many sit-ups. I haven't needed pain medicine here at home yet. My surgeon gives everyone a prescription for a drug called Emend (generic aprepitant) that helps prevent nausea, and you take it right before you go in for surgery. During pre-op prep, the nurses also gave me a Zofran. I took another when I got home just to be on the safe side. I sometimes get carsick, and I had bad nausea after a different surgery last year, so I was worried that I would be quite ill. But so far so good! Good luck on your surgery!
