Probiotics are the natural gut- intestinal flora that are part of your immune system. I would say that although yogurt is good, it.s not the best source of probiotics due to inadequate live cultures. If you do get approval to take one, there are many options but as with anything , you get what you pay for. I like Dr Ohiras and also Pearl Elite. Since we VSG patients have had essentially cut out part of our stomachs thru surgery, we need to replenish and maintain these essential " good" bacteria thru supplementation. They do seem to help with digestion / elimination and since I work in a medical clinic, protection from illnesses.

Starting out at age 45? How common?
Hi Madmax68, I'm so excited for your sister. Yes it's a little pain up front and lots of adjustment to the sleeve, but I wouldn't go back to my old weight for anything. Joint pain is a thing of the past. Wishing her and you the best????Let us hear from you both!

No Wonder I Wasn’t Skinny!
My mother and her mother lived through the depression years and they were Amazing Cooks. My grandmother canned fresh vegetables from her garden and fruit trees to get through the winters. Red beans and corn bread, turnip greens, fried chicken, potatoes, and there was always dessert. Cobbler, cake or cookies and bread. I wasn't that interested in cooking, until I was in my 40s and became obsessed with different cuisines, especially Italian food. That's when my weight became an issue and my health started to decline. High blood pressure, joint pain and other mobility issues came into the picture. I was blessed to have good, mostly healthy foods in my childhood and I have great memories of helping my mom and grandmother in the kitchen. I still feel close to them even thoughI'm preparing much more sensible meals now.????????????

Fantastic NSV!
Today went to cardiologist who hasn't seen me since the VSG surgery in May 2015. After her mouth dropped open at my weight loss, she said you are the picture of health because your blood pressure is normal 120/88, your pulse is ridiculous at 53 bpm, your EKG is normal and she thinks I also look fabulous! ????no meds necessary- see me in a year for a check up. Now how does it get any better than that? She also added that because my blood pressure was very high and uncontrolled at the last visit with me back in April ( before surgery)she honestly thought I was headed for a stroke or major heart attack. She was the one who suggested the surgery and I gave her a big hug today for saving my life????I'm celebrating with a swim tonight.

This is a real victory in your life! What a week. Who would've known you can make it without resorting to food, unless you were tested? So sad about the horse???? though.

Joints ache
My doc has me off all Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs and many WLS patients are told not to take them due to the potential to ulcerate the stomach lining. I had a shoulder problem and got permission to take them for a couple of weeks, but it's not allowed routinely. There may be other things you can do- have you asked your doc for a referral to physical therapy? Maybe they can help you build up strength?be sure to let your WLS doc know about your hips and joints.????

I made it!
Proud of you!!! Way to go!

High blood pressure
My doc waited 2 months to pull me off BP meds, after losing about 25 lbs. since then I have been monitoring my BP and it usually runs in the 110/88 range. If you can keep a log of daily BPs and when you see a downward trend talk to your doc. Congrats on the surgery!

Doctor said "stop losing."
If you are weight training and doing interval training you are way more efficient at calorie burning than most, so 1335 might not be your number. You might really need those extra calories to maintain weight. Don't go by formula go by what works for you. You might need 2000 cals a day if you're hitting the gym hard. Tell us what you're doing, and best of luck????

How are you doing with exercise?
Bbrookmedic I hope you can find some exercise you can tolerate. The water has been a lifesaver for me as I have foot and knee problems. If it's any help, I listen to Dr. Rob Maki's podcast, who seems to have the latest and best science on weight loss. He said you can still lose weight even if the exercise isn't perfect. As you lose weight more movement should be comfortable????. Let us know how you're doing.

How invested are you in the idea of healthy weight loss?
Thanks for your perspective! I think we all bring different experiences which are valuable. Our collective approaches offer options of what works. We should endeavor to bring personal experience from which the viewer or participant can gain ideas. You are a great asset to you support group????thanks for sharing!

How are you doing with exercise?
I'm fairly new here but wonder what or if others are exercising, what you are doing, how often and does it work for you? Is it difficult to maintain? I have been a swimmer since surgery , May 2015. It is helping me achieve my weight loss goals. Here in Texas, it's still in the 90s and I have been able to keep swimming so far. I'm nervous about when it gets too cold to swim. Anybody else doubting their ability to keep up their exercise goals? Pleas share and be kind????????????

Proudgranny I love the way you encourage us all. Thanks for your wisdom and experience. I guess we will all have ups and downs in our weight as we try to maintain progress since the sleeve.

How invested are you in the idea of healthy weight loss?
I think it's easy to read into what a given poster means, without the context we usually rely on in person, such as facial expression, tone of voice, body language. It's hard to know the intent of the person behind the words. I hope I don't come across as trying to be a know it all. Sure I know some things about my own nutrition and how to arrive at a goal for myself but that might not work across the board. I dislike personal attacks, but it doesn't destroy me if someone disagrees with me either. No two people lose weight in the same way. Personally I don't think it's important that we all agree on weight loss techniques. I DO think it matters how we talk to one another whether online or in person. I'm not the antichrist if I believe bread is bad on a diet ( and I do for me) and I don't care if you're cheating on your plan - that's your business. I don't feel the need to be unkind towards anyone in order to feel superior or have the last word. Some folks seem to get off on that, in my experience. Present company excepted.

Liquid Diet-Help
I'm willing to bet most on this web site have had similar experiences to yours, I know I have. Going through this weight loss journey seems to be a series of realizations including ones relationship with food. Boredom, anxiety, are familiar reasons to self soothe with food. My own realization was that I often medicated uncomfortable emotions with food and yes, alcohol. I had to find other ways to occupy myself and acknowledge my dependence on food and alcohol. My ha is and dependence were unhealthy for me and causing detrimental effects on my health. It's a good thing when you find healthier replacements. I had to focus on how was I going to prepare for life after surgery and improve how I coped with my emotions by talking about them or dealing with them. This is a great forum for that!

How invested are you in the idea of healthy weight loss?
Hi Jess9395, It sounds like you are KillingIt with your running and eating program! Congrats in the successful changes you are making. I'm sorry the discussion topic was misleading, but I truly wanted to know what people are doing, changes they are making that benefit their health aft surgery and at the same time wondering what their experience has been on BP. Moderation in all things is a healthy perspective. I think we all have little departures from our program and to me, that is normal and necessary. I'm no model of perfection and I envy your ability to eat one donut! Krispy Cream and I had a close personal relationship and had to break up because it is like Kryptonite for me????. I am one of those people who research a lot and have been concerned about GMOs since realizing they were banned in other many other countries. That led me to try to get them out of my diet as much as possible. Anyway, if the choice was Wendy's I have to have a junior burger without the bun. It's gonna happen eventually.

Clothes
I found a charity gala in my area for women who are coming from abusive relationships. Sometimes they have left everything they own to leave their abusers safely. It seems to ease the pain of letting go of these clothes that I have carefully collected over the past several years.
