2 years after the surgery.....
Holy crap... that's a typo right?! I refuse to believe you have a "child" that is 25 years old when you barely look old enough to order a drink in bar!

Vet Search
Most of us vets that were fairly prolific in the past just aren't wanted by the new members the past year and a half. When putting out fact, not feelings, brands you as a bully or insensitive, the incentive to contribute diminishes. More and more it appears as though people are more concerned with feelings and popularity rather than actually living better. I think the straw that broke the back was the marshmallow peeps conversation. There are very few topics that I bother commenting in anymore. People are just not worth the time to type out the information. Oh, and the vets that are gone aren't coming back even if they wanted to. They were banned. Some with good reason though.

Gum and Beans
Just realized there was a second question. In regards to dried beans, I eat them all the time. They were really only a concern in the beginning in regards to gas. Now I just soak them over night and prepare them as directed by whatever recipe I am using. This is my standby as I emailed it to my wife long ago: I tried just pasting the recipe, but the format kept getting screwed up. Here is the link from when I posted it long ago.

Gum and Beans
I used to chew gum a lot while on long motorcycle tours. I tried it again once I was back to riding post op and the heartburn was horrific. I didn't think anything of it until the next time I had some gum and it happened again. I asked my surgeon about it and he even looked at me strangely and reminded me that it was in my information packet why I wasn't supposed to chew gum. Lo and behold, it was there. I could probably chew it now, but it is no longer a habit so it rarely occurs to me.

DUMPING IS REAL!!
It is most common to RNY, but it most definitely is not regulated to RNY patients only. Even people who have not had any gastric surgery can have the symptoms of dumping syndrome. The only thing that qualifies it explicitly as dumping however is someone who has had a procedure involving the stomach. Anyone who has an adverse reaction to simple carbs/sugar and/or fats can experience all the misery of "dumping" of these things into the blood stream. A diabetic who eats anything that spikes their glucose levels and starts sweating or racing heart, that is a form of dumping. As for being useful as a training tool, oh yes... it'll put the fear of god in you if you experience it just once.

Gum and Beans
Gum will not plug anything up for more than a few minutes. The hydrochloric acid in your stomach will make short work of it. The reason that gum is frowned upon is that the act of chewing signals the brain to release digestive juices. That is why you start salivating when you start chewing gum. This also happens in the stomach and it leads to heartburn many times. Increased acid production is because your stomach is preparing to break down food that is not coming. That can lead to an increased sesnation of hunger as well.

Fitness Trainers and WLS
There is nothing you can do to prevent or lower the chances of loose skin. Once skin has stretched past its elastic limit, it tears and stretch marks happen. The only thing that can be done once that happens is skin removal. It's like the balloons you inflate to their max, then after a day or so you let the air out and the balloon is now misshapen and wrinkly. Same thing with skin. It's not too difficult to have the removal procedure approved if you keep records of the rashes and other complications common with excess skin. BUT, skin removal is not the same as cosmetic surgery. The scar is not as nice as it would be if a plastic surgeon were to do that procedure.

Guys room has been here since I've been here. Don't know when it started really. Sent from my phone. Please forgive brevity and spelling.

Excuse me Guys? Little help here. GUYS ONLY!!!
Couldn't watch Napoleon Dynamite. Just couldn't understand what was supposed to be funny. In The Big Lebowski, John Goodman was the scene stealer.

Excuse me Guys? Little help here. GUYS ONLY!!!
I know it used to be, but since most of the members I used to talk to are gone I am pretty quiet these days. The guys may still be supportive and close knit, I really don't know.

Getting out of the dreaded Friend Zone
It's been a while since I have seen this topic, but there has been some really good discussion on this forum about it. Shocking I know! I don't remember who said it, and I am not saying that it is applicable to you Stephers, but would you be attracted and have romantic thoughts about this guy if her were bigger than you? Many times people only see these things from their point of view which can be narrow. Not because of any selfish reasons, but merely because they cannot think the same as someone else. An overweight person may have all the personality traits that an athletic person is looking for in a significant other. However, if their passion is rock climbing, odds are the overweight person is not going to be a good match. There is so much more to a relationship than just being a nice person and getting along with people. After you get to know each other so well that there is nothing to discover about each other, the challenge is to discover new things together. If one cannot do that, then the relationship may not work out. It doesn't make him/her shallow or an @sshole. All of that being said, if he says "Thank goodness you lost that weight, now I can be seen with you in public!" Write him off. Not even worth having as a friend IMO.

Excuse me Guys? Little help here. GUYS ONLY!!!
Most of the threads I start are in the Guys Room. I'll post there to build content up in that subforum even if the content is applicable to both men & women. I don't mind when women chime in. However, if the subject is something that is strictly soliciting a man's POV or is only applicable to men, I add the prefix of Guy's Room in the title. Though I don't think I have ever created a "racy" topic.

How long were you off work?
I was off 2 weeks because of the drains and pain ball that I went home with. I have an sit down office job and the lethargy was incredible. If I could have taken another week, I would have done it in hindsight. Any sort of lifting one month post op should not be considered in my opinion. Of course, your surgeon is the one you really should ask and abide by. Don't listen to strangers on the internet!

Suggestion
The chat room turned into a creepy fest all too often. It was very uncomfortable as a man, as a woman I would imagine it be twice as bad. Several women left the forum because of interactions that started in the chat room. Not sorry at all to see that feature gone. Private chat however might be something that would work. Real time chat that is private via an invite or something along those lines.

5 Days out and Erectile Dysfunction
Totally normal and you are definitely not alone. Not only can the anesthesia and pain killers cause that issue, but there is also the lack of fluid intake that is common the first couple months. It doesn't even have to get to the point of dehydration, just a serious reduction in your normal intake can cause that to happen. Also, if you were a big guy like me , you may have been (or still are) on blood pressure medicine. If your blood pressure (BP) is now low that is pretty much a stiffy killer. I was taken off all my meds, BP, diabetic, cholesterol... all of it within the first week. Amazing what can happen in such a short time when you stop eating convenient fast food poison.

Wth
Within the first year post op, the nerve endings in the stomach are still healing and trying to re-attach. Electrical impulses are not always able to travel to the brain. That is why there are areas of numbness in the skin near any incision when you have surgery. Same thing in the stomach. With this numbness, it is very difficult to "feel" full or satiated. Many surgeons preach measuring food portions, but several of them don't go into detail as why. This is the primary reason. It is also to train you as to what a normal portion looks like so that it can become a habit. The reason we burp or have pain after over eating or eating too quickly is because though symptoms are not related to sensation or pain receptors; it is because the volume of your new stomach is at capacity or over. The body will try to rectify it by either forcing it through the pylorus or back up the esophagus. Generally speaking, the lower esophageal sphincter is weaker than the pylorus, so the gas escapes quicker via burping. Of course, this is also why vomiting occurs. However, if one continues to over eat or eat too quickly, the pylorus can weaken and start allowing food into the intestines without being digested properly. This is a bad thing BTW.

Wth
That is a pretty vague post. Going by what little you typed, I am going to assume that you are relatively fresh post op. Most likely in the regular food stage. Probably eating too much and/or too fast and not weighing/measuring your portions. Trapping air from eating too rapidly causes the burps and belching. Eating too fast also means you will miss a signal saying you are full and will eat more than you should and that is when the stomach starts to spasm and the diaphragm gets involved with the hiccups. Measuring your food will help if you are a fast eater due to you stopping when the food is gone rather than eating until you think you are full. Or I could be way off and you are talking about something entirely different.

I regret this surgery
Wow, you have only been on the forum since April and have shown yourself to be a real charmer. Has there been a thread that you have participated where you did not call someone a bully, cruel, or mention your profession? I do question the quality of someones education that is allegedly approaching a doctorate in psychology yet had to resort to surgery to correct a psychological problem. Why didn't you interact with your colleagues in regards to your food addiction? I don't usually defend forum members, but Véronique is nothing but supportive in the threads I have read. However; you attacking her, or trying to make an example of her, so that no one dare question you is a jerk move.

Annoyed....
lol, that's cute. Maybe you haven't been here very long? This is the norm for this website. Many people just join for attention and they'll take any kind they can receive; positive or negative. It doesn't matter. Just as long as they get some sort of attention. Just ignore them as best you can.

Best exercise for front of thighs?
Any increase in muscle mass will aid in fat loss, and the posterior chain is comprised of the largest muscles in the body. So on one hand, weight in the gym is a good idea. However, if small legs is the goal, then you are right.

Iron supplements suggestions ?
Ah, that changes things. I am 2.5 years out. Yeah, you'll need a supplement until you are further out.

A whole new life
Jesus, your boyfriend sounds like an @sshole. I totally understand that he didn't have surgery and doesn't have to change his lifestyle, but it wouldn't kill him to be a little more considerate in the first few months. The first month can be very difficult emotionally. I've seen people literally fall apart and get sloppy wet crying face feeling that they were a failure because they had to resort to surgery. Those same people today are happier than ever and more confident than they have ever been since I have known them. Stay the course, follow the plan, and things will get better.

I regret this surgery
The thing to worry about in regards to swimming pools is the bacteria and all around nasty crap people do in the water. If you still have healing surgical scars, you shouldn't be near a pool for risk of infection as well as tainting the water. The same goes for going to the gym. Gyms are terrible for germs and bacteria and not a place you want to be immediately post op.
