  1. I wouldn't drink the slimfast. There is too much sugar in it and a lot of carbs. In the Kaiser Bariatric Program, they mention to not used Slimfast or Atkins. If you want a Protein shake, go with Syntrax nectar. Its 100 calories for a scoop, but no carbs or sugars and 23g of protein. This shake keeps me full the entire day and I drink Water as well. Good luck
  2. I was going thru the same issues when I initially started this journey. i did my research, talked to my surgeon, and talked to people on here and through other support groups. The dr mentioned that because of the amount of weight I want to lose, we can always do the sleeve and if it doesn't work as well, can always come up and do the bypass. I only want to have the surgery once. So after everything, i have finally chosen the bypass for many other reasons besides the surgeon. I would get a piece of paper and fold it it in half. I would go the pros and cons for each and see if you can find your decision that way. Your the only one that can make this decision. Good luck
  3. Hello Tiana. I am Nicole and I am in the pre-op part of this process as well in Northern California. I have my insurance through Kaiser and I have currently completed the 2 hr orientation, 4hr class, 1 surgeon appointment, and nutrition class. I have my next appointment scheduled on May 21st for my psychological exam. I am 3lbs shy of the goal weight they have given, but will hopefully reach that when I go back in. Good luck on your journey
  4. I guess I am in a lucky situation. I have the ability to work from home, and even got permission from my boss to do so. Before I have surgery, I will either have a loaner laptop or someone from my IT department will place a PC in my house. I am hoping to only be out between 1-2 weeks, because I will get crazy being at home.
  5. For that kind of stress you get an out. Hope everything goes well.
  6. I have the opposite where I have a super supportive significant other, but get afraid of what just happened with you. I had to have foot surgery a few years ago and was laid up for 4 weeks. My boyfriend at the time ( ex husband now) was completely confident in telling me that after my surgery was going to help me and assured my mom, who lives out of town, that I would be taken care of otherwise I would have gone home with her. Well, long story short he slept all day and played video games all night and didn't help me. I wasn't supposed to be on my foot, but by day 2 I had to get up and around if I was going to feed myself. It was horrible. My situation now is different but I still have that fear. We have talked about it and he has assured me this will be different. I am 6 lbs away from my gastric bypass surgery and cant wait to get everything started. I would say breathe, let him cool off, and have a sit down talk with him to get deep down of why he feels that way. Like the posts prior, he is probably nervous and scared as well.
  7. Hello, Definitely make sure to do your research. Talk with your dr. They will help you with any questions that you may have and depending on how much you want to lose, you will come together and make a choice. My insurance doesn't do the lap band anymore because there isn't a high success rate, too much maintenance, and the ability to have a 2nd stomach and not lose the weight is great. This forum is amazing and you will find a lot of information on here. Good luck on your journey
  8. Hello everyone, I am curious what items people are wearing right after surgery when you are recovering, and afterwards. I work in a professional environment where I need to be nicely dressed and not sure if my slacks are going to hurt being on my stomach after surgery. I will more than likely be going back to work within 1-3 weeks depending on what the dr says, and will be working from home 1-2 days after surgery Any advice on what works and doesn't is greatly appreciated.
  9. Apples are super good for you and dont have as much sugar as some of the melons or acidic fruit. Apples are the kind of fruit that actually burns calories. It takes more effort to eat and process the apple than consuming it.
  10. I wanted to say welcome to the group. I just recently posted my weight after keeping it hidden for almost a month. I finally decided that other people's negative comments will not bother me. I am the same as you, need to lose about 200 lbs. I think having a good support system at home and here is super important. I have talked to nothing but nice people on here and have gotten my questions and advice answered. We can do this if we all work together and stay positive
  11. Originally my heart was set on the gastric sleeve surgery, since it was the less evasive of the two. When I met with the dr he mentioned we can do the sleeve and I didn't lose the amount of weight that I wanted, he could go back in and do the bypass. Have you spoken to your dr about what you are going thru? or possible see a different dr? Good luck to you
  12. I know that edaname beans are super good protein and they have different flavors. If you have a sprouts market in your area they carry them in the deli section and they are soft.. There are also dried ones, but those are hard and I wouldn't suggest that yet
  13. I don't believe that it will affect anything, unless for some reason you gain any weight from it. My surgeon has stated a few times that if you gain even 1lb over the goal weight that you are given he will cancel the surgery. Good luck in your journey
  14. Hey there, Well I had my first surgeon appointment today. I was super nervous when I was in there, but it went better than expected. In the two weeks since starting the 1200 calorie diet I have lost 12 pounds. I didn't think I had done that and it was great to hear that with that weight loss, I am only 12 pounds away from meeting my goal weight for surgery. YAY ME Since I have started this journey my mind has always been set on having the gastric sleeve. From my research it is the less evasive of the two. When I met with the dr today, he mentioned that gastric sleeve is good, but the bypass would be better. He also mentioned that if I am not able to lose the weight from the sleeve, we can always convert to the bypass later. So my question to everyone is, and knowing that I don't want to go through 2 procedures, did anyone get the sleeve and regret not getting the bypass and visa versa? Your input would be appreciated
  15. Thank you everyone for your kind and wonderful words. Yesterday was a bad day for me, but I woke up with a new attitude and outlook. I will not less this slow me down. I can do this!
  16. I am in week 2 of my diet and to say the least it's not easy. I went from eating whatever I want to a strict less than 1200 calorie day. No soda, sweets, or fast food. I have been doing ok with it so far, no crazy or emotional days and have been fine with others eating whatever they want in front of me. Today on the other hand, was a huge task. My family wanted Panda Express for dinner tonight, and that left me to be on my own. Normally when they want Panda I am fine with it because I don't like chinese food so I would just go to the nearest taco bell drivethru and pick up something. This time I decided I should go to the grocery store and pick up something more healthy. This is where I broke down. I had no idea what I wanted and literally walked around the store for over an hour with an empty basket and literally almost in tears because I didn't know what to do. I couldn't leave empty handed because otherwise I would make the poor decision and go to fast food. I was just about to give up when I found fajita chicken, but it was right next to the bakery section, bad placement by the way. So i went over there to look around, see if I want to buy something for my family, and I end up buying a chocolate doughnut. No sooner than I get to the car, that doughnut is fully in my mouth. Once I was done and saw the empty doughnut bad, the guilt set in bad.. I just feel dumb for having something so simple bother me, and now I can't get it over it. Talked to my boyfriend who said its okay..I made a big change and it's going to take sometime to adjust and it wasn't something to beat myself up over it. I know its going to take some time to adjust, but how do you deal with the guilt? I feel ashamed and embarrassed that I did this. I am normally such a strong person, but this is hard and I just don't want to give up so easily.
  17. Well welcome and everyone has the same feeling that you do. I am starting the journey myself. I have gone to the basic orientation and the bariatric program 4 hr class. I still have several steps to go and I see the surgeon on the 10th to see how much weight I have to lose and the next step. In my case I have the support of my boyfriend and dad, but it can be difficult talking to my mom about it. She thinks I need to try other things and that I am just not patient enough to have other things work. She keeps telling me this isn't a miracle. I understand what I am going to be going through and I have done all my research. i have tried other things that don't work, so this my my next step. If you ever need some encouragement or someone to talk to, I am here to help
  18. I haven't had the surgery yet. I am in the process of going through the program. I have been to 2 classes and I have my first drs. appt with the surgeon on april 10th. You will be very welcomed here, I know I have in the short amount of time I have been on this site
  19. QVC has a fitbit on special right now for 100.00. My mom got it for me for an early birthday present. I am excited to start using it
  20. congrats on your progress.. Keep up the amazing work
  21. Believe it or not, eating half a pickle or drinking a little pickle juice will help. I know they are high in sodium, however they have potassium which will help. Anytime I overwork myself and my legs are sore, I will do that. if I don't, I sometimes get charlie horse cramps in my legs at night
  22. I have also read on another discussion that taking fish oil will help with loose and sagging skin, however I am not sure if thats right. I thought fish oil was to help with the heart. Has anyone taken this and had results?
  23. @@likelike I did the 2 hour class, then got the referral from my primary care doctor for the next step. It took about 2-3 weeks in order for that department to give me a call. After the first week of hearing nothing, I contacted my primary care doctor and asked if he knew what the timeframe was or if he heard anything. He gave me the number to the south sacramento facility and I called. The lady who I spoke to on the phone says it takes a few weeks because they go over your chart first to make sure if you are approved. Once you are conditionally approved, they call you to set up the 4 hr class. I hope this is helpful
  24. Have you noticed any changes in what you eat? Like certain foods, healthy foods, that you can no longer eat because they upset your stomach? I took two weeks off but could have easily gone back in a week. I have a job that isn't physically demanding though. I was also very lucky and have had zero complications.
  25. Well the 4 hr course is the introduction to the bariatric surgery department. There will be guest speakers from the surgeons and dieticians. They will weight you, then tell you what you need to do next. I guess during that time they will also give you your next appointment. They mentioned it could be that day or another time. When I go, I will have more info to share. What part of northern california? I am in the sacramento area
